Guys, new to the V8s, and I need a little help. Found a 928S4 GT with under 30k, Automatic. Seller has all documented service and car seems to be straight. Im wondering what the low down on these GTs is? I am not familiar with a GT, is it an upgrade from an S4?
Only issue I found was upholstery coming apart at the top of the drivers door, should be easy fix.
Thanks in advance guys!

Hi Brad-

Welcome to the shark tank! For some reason, many car ads for '87-91 928's list them as 928 S4/GT's. If a 928 has an automatic transmission, then it's not a GT- all GT's are 5-speed cars, made in '89, 90, and '91.

What year? What VIN? Got any pics? Whose shop (that has 928-specific experience) is going to do your PPI?

Sorry, more questions than answers, that's how it works around here.

So I ask for the VIN, and he comes up with a story about how the odometer was replaced and the car has 27,000 miles and the odometer reads 19,000. "All documented, blah blah blah..."
I am leaving this one alone.

If this is the car I'm thinking of, it has the original timing belt/water pump. You would need to take care of that ASAP, so factor that into the cost which seems a bit high at 29k to begin with.

yep, that's the car... Funny that he says experts at the Porsche dealership told him it was fine and he didn't need to change the TB. I agree the odometer situation is strange. Car fax would probably help confirm the story. I understand the seller didn't want to provide more high res pics which is a pain.

I looked at it online for someone here in Houston that was interested.

Brad,

Great move to start asking about 928's you are interested in purchasing on this site. LOADS of info here for the reading - do a search on a specific aspect of the car and you'll probably get a good start on understanding that part.

I've had automatics and manuals, from '87 through '94. All have their advantages in my opinion. I dDrove an automatic for several years, including 4-5 years with it PCA Drivers Education events (high performance driving on various racetracks like Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, Road America, etc.). Wanted a bit more control for the track, so got an '88 5 speed. That morphed a few years later to an '89 5 speed. By that time I also had an automatic GTS.

I prefer the manual for the track (although automatic lap times were within a second or two of the manual), but if I'm going to be exposed to much stop and go traffic, I definitely prefer the manual.
About 75% of all '87+ 928's were automatic, so they are more plentiful, and the price is usually about 20+ percent higher for the manual cars.

Good luck, and we'll be anxious to have you join us here in the pool.

Hi Brad.

I'm going to reiterate the above: this is where you want to be with 928 questions. I'll add that this forum has probably the genuinely nicest and most helpful group of folks on RL, maybe on the entire net! I just got back into a Shark and I can't say enough about the help and suppport I've received during my search.

Don't be a stranger, and if you let us know what you're looking for, you'll get more CL and eBay suggestions than you'll know what to do with! I sure did, and it was great.

Good luck with your search.
