Default Emergency wheel and electric trunk release

Ok how is that space saver wheel supposed to work? if i inflate it, it opens up like a bag of popcorn in the microwave and won't fit in the compartment anymore.

Also my trunk release motor works but the linkage does not push the latch far enough to open.
Does the receiver have to be replaced or the latch on the tailgate?

Thx in advance.

There have been reports here of people inflating the spare then managing to deflate it and get it back into the wheel well using a ratcheting strap to compress the tire back into storage shape.

Make sure the "plastic" liner in the receiver is intact. If not, you can order a replacement from 928sRUs. Some have had success wrapping a few tie wraps around the bottom moving cam part to augment it. Also, there is some up/down adjustment to the receiver motor and arm.

i did not inflate it all the way so it wasn't too hard to undo it. the question is what to do if you're on the road and do not have a compressor handy.

as for the trunk receptacle, the liner is tight and i removed it and worked the linkage manually to see what is going on and it simply won't push the latch back far enough to disengage.

You can put a couple thin zip ties on the cam that is in part #11 in drawing. This will push farther on part #19 enabling the trunk to open.

Without an air compressor you can't use the spare, of course. The 928 came with a compressor that was stored inside the wheel and was powered by the cigarette lighter socket. There are numerous similar aftermarket compressors that should fit in the wheel. But with the age of these spares, they may not be usable. Someone recently reported the spare delaminated quickly under use. Major cracks in the rubber were seen on inflation and the tire quickly came apart. Mine looks pristine but I have never tried to inflate my 24 year old spare and evaluate its condition. In general, tires over 10 years old are considered dangerous, but in some environments the rubber and carcass can survive better than in others.

As Jeff and I mentioned, people have put some tie wraps around that cam. There are pictures in an old thread somewhere here.

Here you go. Alan recently reposted his old cure, still working years later...

WYAIT check the side sections of number 11in post #4 to see whether there is any cracking due to the tongue be placed in tension (pushed towards the back of the car). The mechanism should be in compression at all time from the back side of the tapered plastic insert in the receiving receptacle. IF the tongue is cracked or the insert is too worn, the cam can push the tongue towards the back of the car and the cam may not release the locking mechanism.

IF this is happening you may need to replace the unit. The tongue can be repaired by fitting a doubler plate to the side sections and correctly adjusting the mechanism.
