Default '87 S4 Garage Queen

After over a year of setting in the garage with no driving, just a few start ups to keep the fluids warm I recently was able to take the car to my mechanic for new timing belt, rebuilt water pump, brake fluid flush and refill and oil change. Car ran in middle of temp gauge before in just about any weather, now runs 3/4 to top of white line in Oregon fall wx, (60-70F)- cooling flaps never opened to full, only 30% at this temp, both fans running Took ir measurement at upper hose @ 84 C, lower hose 77 C while idling and gauge at top of upper white line after normal drive of 30 minutes. Assuming ir thermometer is calibrated is this okay? Should temp gauge be recalibrated? Your thoughts please, a little anxiety of gauge now at top of white now.-'87 s4, 96 K

if it was running cooler before the work then maybe you also need to swap in
a new thermostat and rear seal and O ring and coolant bottle cap,
maybe also a new temp sender

Just the cap.

Yes, the 2 prong sensor on the LH (driver) side of the water bridge is for the gauge. Unplug it and the gauge will go to zero to verify.

That is the wired sender on the Left side of the bridge. The unit on the Right is the Temp II sensor.

This is the one Stan is talking about:
This is for a '91. I think it should be the same for the '87.
