This is for an early '86 928S 32V Auto.
I buttoned her up already but just want to know if I need to dive back in. I knew something bad would happen if I were touch it but like the curious fool I did so anyways.
I took off the 14-pin connector to "clean it" but took it off from the base backing by accident. I then cleaned it up (electrical cleaner and wiping) and then proceeded to plug it back into the base. However, all the female plugs popped out of the plastic part.
I didn't know where they all went but they kind of were deformed into where they were in the plastic part so I just lined it up and pressed them in where I think they went and put it all together.
If the plugs were switched, what type of problems would I see?

Ohh..lots.
Gauge problems, AC issues, might/might not start..
Probly not a fire, but I guess you COULD get them enough wrong to put the fat hot pin into the wrong place..
Roger sells the kit to repair it all, its fun to get back to your soldering gun roots.

All you need to put it back together correctly is the wiring diagram with the pin assignments or ask someone to list them for you. I had a quick look at your MY wiring diagram but was struggling to interpret it- I found it a bit confusing compared to what I was expecting so would hate to give you bad info.
As you say, the configuration more orless ensures you get most of them right and the folds give away the LH/RH orientation but I would not rely on that and heavens knows the consequences of getting the assignments wrong.
Regards
Fred

14-pin connector pin assignments....85-86 notes at the bottom..
87-88 are the same. 89+ has an additional wire (pin 7)
TOP (male pins)
PIN - WIRE COLOR/STRIPE - Function
1 - Blue - alternator exciter
2 - Blue/Black - oil pressure
3 - Blue/Yellow - coolant temp
4 - Blue/White - oil pressure
5 - Blue/Green - coolant temp
6 - Green/Blue - oil level
7 - EMPTY except 89+ Brown/Red - oil pressure
8 - EMPTY
9 - Black - AC compressor clutch coil
10 - Green - intake air temp switch for fans
11 - EMPTY
12 - EMPTY
13 - Brown - intake air temp switch for fans (ground)
14 - Yellow - starter solenoid
The BOTTOM (female pins) differs at:
7 - 89+ Brown/Green
10 - Brown/Blue
The 85/86 connector differs in:
7 - Red/White - auxiliary air valve
10 - EMPTY (in 12 instead)
12 - Green - intake air temp switch for auxiliary fan
13 - Red/Green - intake air temp switch for auxiliary fan
and top and bottom wire colors are the same.

Bill beat me to it - I can confirm his indications [not that such is likely to be needed] for your model year.
For some weird reason in my wiring diagrams Porsche do not seem to list the locations for the 14 pin connector for your model year like they do for mine [93 GTS]. Therefore one has to scan the diagrams to ensure nothing is missed. They are covered in fields I26/27- p3, I33/34-p4 & G/H 65 -p7.

In a pinch and without help of the WSM's or the support team here, connectors usually have the same size and color wires joined together. So you can gently remove the cover on the other half, and match colors found there. Y
Mixing the wires has the serious potential for damage. That harness includes both low- and high-current circuits. Mix a couple, and your oil pressure sender is roasted when you try to start the engine, for instance. Best to stop, take a break, and get the info you need before making a potentially $$inconvenient mistake. There are more than a few cases here where a casual mistake like this resulted in extended troubleshooting and repairs to find and fix all the melted wiring. Hope yours turns out well!!

Thanks everyone.
The wires were "spaced" between the top three and bottom two and what was left and right so I think they're okay for the most part. The right side especially they all lined up and fell into spot. I had some doubts about the top left two though so I'm going to pull it again to confirm I got all the pins right

You'd think they'd lock them in there. It was a PITA to get the plate back on because the pins kept falling out and the wires had to channel down the middle. Didn't want to handle them too much because I was afraid the plugs would separate from the wire.

pictures pictures pictures - with everyone having a camera at all times in the cell phone these days, I photograph everything before taking things apart just in case. It takes a second, and you just never know. If you get that queasy feeling, take some pics first, during and after.

purists don't read any further.....
i don't get why owners are not switching out these to weatherpack, etc. connectors.
easy to swap out, reliable serviceable connectors...
i ask myself this question all the tie when i read about connections in the 928.
