Default Opinions on this Finger Lakes region car, please.

Up in the Finger Lakes area. The ad wasn't much (http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/4120915855.html), but I asked the seller for info, especially related to maintenance and got the following:
Thank you for your interest in the car. It is a very fun car to drive. The car was purchased in Corning from our neighbor who kept it indoors during the winters (he had 2 Porsches and drove his 1986 during the winter months) back in 2005 as he was just trying to unload it. We had a 2 car garage and kept inside during the winters. We got it with 128, 000 + miles. It currently is at 137,000 + . The interior is good, however we received it with a long horizontal crack in the very top edge of the dashboard. Our neighbor simply put a piece of black leather/rubber strip across it glued it down. It is not noticeable unless you look for it. The passenger side seat is worn on one of the seams. Other than that, all other interior seat cushions and backs in the front and back are in decent shape.

We have not driven it much as we do not have the time for it and are now simply interested in selling it.

The engine runs solid. In October 2012, we replaced the transmission completely and it runs awesome now. It was sluggish when we got it back in 2005 but didn't have the money to upgrade then. We replaced it and have the receipt from Klopp's Transmission in Corning. A month ago they also replaced the shift cable as it was wearing out. I have that receipt too.

When we got the car in 2005, in May, within a month after purchase, we got the timing belt replaced, new water pump, new hoses, new battery, some new relay switches and fuses, oil change, and new tranny fluid and filter change. All work was done by the Head instructor of the Auto Tech Department at Corning Community College, as he is a foreign car specialist and good friend of mine. He did a full car inspection and went over it closely for me. The only thing he said we needed otherwise was new tires at some point. Also, that there was a hole in the muffler. The muffler definitely needs to be replaced at this point. (I think it sounds good and loud.) The tires have been replaced with 4 Yokohamas. Not sure exactly when we bought them as it has been a while. However, they may only have 5-6,000 miles on them as we don't drive it much. The folks at Klopp's Transmission feel we need to replace the brake pads at this point, but I haven't yet.

Since then we changed the oil numerous times during the summers ourselves.

The exterior molding strips have fallen apart as you can see in the photos. I wanted to paint the car but have not the time and money at the moment.

The car needs a new inspection sticker as it expired last year and once we got it back from the transmission replacement, last October, we garaged it and then moved. So it still needs to be inspected. I have not registered it yet as it expired in June and we hoped to have sold it by now.

That is the status.

Let us know if you are interested in taking a test drive. I have attached some additional pics. I will follow with a couple more emails with more pics too
Input much appreciated. Anyone up that way that can take a look?

Hmm - car ran sluggish until they replaced the transmission! Could be that the flex plate had not been checked/adjusted, and the thrust bearing was being worn!!!!!!!!!!!!! Contact of the crankshaft with the block is known to result in sluggish engine output.

Don't know anything personally about the car. Curt Hinchcliff lives in the Rochester area and is here on Rennlist.

Gary-

Airflite40 - Thanks, wasn't aware of that, will try to keep in my memory bank! But, I think this is the first time I've heard of a car being 'sluggish' because of the AT. Engine revving because of slippage maybe, but motor low on power is what I think of regarding 'sluggish'.

TBF isn't a problem in 84 and older models.

looks like a solid bones car for an easy resto Shawn. What's the sense on price?
Also, as mentioned above, TBF not a worry on an 82.

$4300 or so assuming 137K mi. Looks pretty darn good to me from afar.
Assuming original bodywork, never been hit.

137 vs 37K mi? How is that?.

Asking is $5,500, but he's already dropped it once.

I've asked for some closeups of the rub strips to see what's going on there. My plan is to remove them anyway.

I've also asked if it has A/C. His email doesn't mention it and I can't tell from either the console (too small, bad angle) or the motor (not sure what to look for).

Gonna need new wheels or a pair of spacers on the rear. I never did care for the way the OB rear tires tucked under the fender.

The pumpkin looks like it's actually hanging down. How much is a new one going for these days?

Given the choice between this and the blue 86.5, for the same money, I liked the 86.5.

The 86.5 evaporated after I declined. I suspect she had another, lower, offer and was waiting to see if I'd bite at the original asking price.

Well, I think you may be able to better for the money. I love me some 82, but under the hood just looks kind of unloved to me.
The tires are probably too old.
IDK, I just think you could probably do better than this one for the money.

If you plan on taking off the rub strips, you'll have 2 holes in the doors that you'll have to deal with. If they are still in decent shape (maybe need repainted?) they can easily be put back on with new tape and clips after cleaning up the door

Didn't all 928's come with A/C? But, if it works or is all there is another question.

Did you ask if all the electronics work? Sunroof, windows, wipers, fluid pumps, defroster, cruise, lights, hatch release, central locking......

At least the Chilton repair manual behind the passenger seat is worth a good $25.

I'm waiting on a call back, I'll ask about the electronics & such then. I'm wondering what happened with the lead digit on the odo, for instance.

They could be ordered without AC. That one near the Outer Banks that was being discussed a couple months ago had no AC.

I actually don't like rub strips. My indy can take care of a couple small holes and a paint match. They did an amazing job on the door of my Cayenne after it was badly scraped against the side of my cinder block garage.

It needs exhaust, brakes, tires, and rub strips at least. If everything else is in order, I'm thinking of offering $4,500. That might be a tad high, but that's offset by the fact that other cars I'm seeing are a flight and a long drive home away (St Louis, Tampa, etc.).

If this is the car that was run in NY upstate winters, I'd wave off immediately. Nowhere else in the country ruins cars more quickly, they use a new molasses extract type of sticking agent for the salt. It destroys EVERYTHING, my 2011 Escape is rotting on the frame already! It's not just the body panels to consider either, every nut on an old car run in that environment is going to be rusted, badly and a PIA to do even simple repairs on.

$5500 for what looks like a fantastic, low-mileage car? Well, it's an '82 so they're clearly not giving it away but I recall the recent Excellence Buyers' Guide suggesting that the '82 was the best of the 928s to drive. Even if you paid $5000 I don't think that's outrageous and you're getting a--wait for it--a 928! I'd ask them to Safety it or what ever NY State calls it. With so few miles you can expect a reliable run for some time yet. At least until the electrical Gremlins discover where you live..!

Try offering $4, and work up to $4.5. Explain what you need to do, and capitalize on the length of time they have had trying to sell it. I like the car and it fits with what you are looking to do.

More pics from the seller. Closeups of the rub strips - not sure what happened there, looks like something chewed on them.

Damn if it doesn't look like the car was resprayed at some point. I think I'm seeing overspray on the passenger side mirror rubber mount. I'm also not too confident I see the right amount of black rubber at the seams front and back.
