the GTS coating is either a fusion bonded epoxy or a phenolic. both of which are specifically designed to be chemically resistant. I'm guessing the Eastwood stripper is water based and will eat the magnesium. It also won't dissolve the GTS coating. That's the problem with nearly all strippers. Even non-water based products. They work by chemically breaking down the 'liquid' content of the original coating. After 20 years of heat cycling in your engine compartment there isn't much 'liquid' left to dissolve from the GTS coating. Its basically a ceramic at this point. which is why it chips off easily once loose. But, please be careful with any industrial chemical stripping agents.

Just an update. Spoke to the powder coater now and he said he has about 90% of the inside coating off and 80% off of the outside. Said the inside basically came off in sheets. He's sending me pictures later today which I will post.

Thanks again, everyone! With me, it takes a village to put back a GTS engine! You guys are that village

Power coater recommends that he remove all of the inner material and not re powder coat the inside. Is that the correct way to do it? What happens if you don't have a covering on the inside of the intake?
Any media used on the intake will get trapped under any loose interior powder coating, falling out and ruining the engine, at a later date.

All of the interior powder coating needs to be removed.....and because there is generally so much oil inside the intakes on a GTS, it is not necessary to have it re-coated.

I'm not aware of any easy method.....but I have not tried Eastwood's powder coating remover.

I spent hours chipping away the old coating on the last GTS engine.

They are definitely worse than S4 intakes, the coating is thicker too. But the result is nice.

Why not media blast? Cant you just use plastic media and start at a lower pressure. You can tell while your doing it if the metal is smearing. I would not recommend chemically stripping the metal.

I am confused about your post. Did he powder coat the outside and now trying to strip the inside. You can start with glass media then go down to plastic. I am not sure how many media blasters he has.

Anyone ever sent their manifold to extrude hone for their "cleaning service?" Might be cost effective if these things are taking 7 or more hours to clean out.

Here are the pics from the powder coater after he worked on it. Intake went thru the oven twice, which he said removed about 90% of the inner coating. Then blasted with crushed carbon to get the remaining. Then he fabricated a tool to get up in the runners, heated the tool, and he said the coating just came off. Said there is still a little bit in the runners(used a boroscope camera to find it) that he can't get at. Now he is going to mask the inside and powder coat the outside. Once I get it back, I will start the task of triple checking for any powder coating residue.

What do you think?

Thanks, Sean. Coming from you, the guy who spent 7 hours chipping away at a GTS intake, that means a lot
