I knew at the price I'm working that I'd be getting a car with some issues. This won't be a daily-driver, more like a weekly driver with a handful of longer trips. Right now, I put less than 5,000 miles a year on my 951. Since we mostly drive around in the family truckster (the Cayenne), adding a Shark to the stable will actually cut that number: figure 3,500 each.

Man, that color combo, though!

I think I'll wait until tomorrow and offer $4k. If she bites, I'll drive it back, have the dent knocked out and have it detailed, then drive it for a few weeks. Then I'll tear into the TB/WP for a winter project.

that's where I'd be with this. Clearly the odo was broken, as that looks like a 100k plus mile car for sure. Still, looking at those receipts and the top end paint, somebody gave it some love at some point. This means that with a little paint and polish, this car might clean up real nice. It is a bit more of a crap shoot than it first appeared. I'm glad I'm not in your shoes

Adam reminded me to check the crankshaft end play. I read some of the threads about this and I'm tracking. I know this is critical, but the car has to get back to the barn (about 250mi).

So: Is there a way to check for this condition before the car even trades hands without a taking bunch of stuff apart?

I see that in this thread Silver Streak said that he hand cranked the motor before adjusting and it was tight. Can I put the car in neutral, get a socket on it and turn it and get a rough idea if I have a problem?

Shawn,

There is nothing wrong with trying to get a deal on a car that needs who knows what.

When someone is selling a car and does not have it detailed (polished etc) as per Adam's description, they do not deserve top dollar imo and may not really care.

You can always go up with the offer if you really like it. You can't go down.

I think $4k is too much based on what i've read and the situation. I know everyone here wants their 928 to be valuable, but right now most are not.
You will have too much money into it in the end at 4 grand unless you do everything yourself as i do.

I paid asking of $5000 for my car with under 60k original miles and every receipt including Bill of Sale. Offer her 2 grand cash.

The quarter alone may cost you $2000 to have it done right, down here it would easily. I'm sure up in the Poconos you can find better prices but anyone good will want at least over $1200 to repair and blend the quarter. At least. Then you will need suspension work and a TB/WP etc.

These divorce settlement cars usually go very cheap, they just want them gone.
I wouldn't blow an opportunity on this one very cheap. It will end up going cheap to someone else anyway.

Well done Bob, didn't look or sound like it would take much to get it to daily driver status.

You can't handle the one you already have!!

J/K - nice to have that car in the local (extended) neighborhood.

If the wife finds out, give me at least a few hours notice to make a spot in the garage.

Hmmm....we need a project car for a build weekend...... I'll contact the usual suspects...

Alright, I was just playing around. I DID NOT BUY IT.
I would, if I was in the market. I think it is a great looking car, that needs a little help.
I just wanted Shawn to see how much he would miss it if it were gone.
Also, just a reminder to you all, sometimes beer and Rennlist make strange bedfellows.

Oh, you're a crack up! Luckily, I clicked into the thread at the very end and this was the first post I saw.

Thanks for the heads-up, Matt. I already have a gorgeous 951. I'm looking for a GT.

I doubt very much she's going to bite, even at $4k. The ad has been on CL for three weeks at the current price. Considering how ill-prepared she was for any questions, I was the only inquiry in that time. Clearly, they're prepared for the long-haul or they would have lowered the asking price by now. I know I would have.
