Default 89 S4 fuel line question

So while I'm digging into the grounds again, I have the fuel pressure regulators (er, regulator and damper?) out of the car. The "U" shaped hose between them lost all of it's insulation and kind of looks like it's purely held on by barbs? That causes me confusion, as I'd expect a swaged connection. I also have the line from the firewall to these two out, and would like to replace both of these with new.

Any risk in cutting off the U line, when I don't totally understand how it is hooked in? (is it really just held on with barbs??)

Will replace both of these with new high pressure fuel line and efi clamps if I'm not going to be biting off more than I want by cutting off the original. With the insulation gone I'm not keen on putting it back in anyway.

And then I found this:

...hmm. I see others clamping onto barbs without consternation. I get Mr. Brown's point though.

I do not believe that Roger (928 R Us), who originally made up the kits for installing rubber hose onto these barbs, recommends doing this, any longer.

Roger does stock my hoses, however.

For MY 1989 Porsche changed the fuel hose material to a Polamide (IIRC) and a full description is contained in the Tech Information Manual for that year and yes the "U" shape hose is only held on by the barbs and when removed it should not be bent of squeezed as it will damage same. The end of the hose connection to the engine fuel dampers and regulators is also a polamide hose.

The hose connecting the two fuel rails at the front of the engine is of a different material and is prone to cracking etc with age and heat.

So 928.110.359.07 is the part number stamped onto a tired fuel line (reenforced rubber, not insulated plastic) that was "swaged" onto a barb. All appeared original, based solely on patina and apparent fit. BUT this appears to be the return side, so low pressure.

For the moment, I'm going to possibly be penny wise and pound foolish and go with clamp-on-barb just to get it back together. And make sure the extinguisher is charged, maybe tie a nylon cord around the fuel pump fuse and keep the other end by the shifter. <kidding, kinda?>

Once I'm putting it on the road for regular use instead of just up and down the driveway I'll get some real hose fitted. Female metric to Male AN seem to be fairly common in 14x1.5 and 16x1.5.

Mr Brown can you share the sizes for all the female metrics I'd need? Both the "U" hose ends of the regulator/dampers and the connection on the fuel cooler?
