Default car won't start

Hi
84 us has always starts on the first couple of cranks.
Today, it starts and died right away and wouldn't restart. (Never happened before)
Since its sitting in a parking lot i couldn't do a whole lot but to leave it there
( also have to go out of town tommor )
I can hear the fuel pump only for couple of seconds after i stopped the cranking, is that normal?
It cranks but won't fire, plug wires are all new, tune up not due for another year, all electrical checked out ok three years ago.
Should i jump the relay first?
Thanks
Barry

Fuel pump operation you describe is normal.

I'd suggest 3 way jumper of fuel injection relay. See if that works.

Next would be pass cam cover ground points (2 of them, one hidden). That's where all engine electronics are grounded on 84.

Stan has the right approach, along with ensuring the L-jet relay is operating.

I did some more reading about jumping fuel injection relay.......how to you make a 3 way jumper wire? it says to jump 30 to 87 to 87 something like that?

if your car has been running good and the green wire is original,
then after swapping relays and a fuel pump fuse thats the next thing that gets replaced.
Bad green wires have killed many good running engines

84 injector relay is not swappable with the others, its special. It is a common electrical failure point for the LJet 84. It costs roughly $50.

Fuel pump relay on 84 is also different. (On an S4 the LH, EZK and fuel pump relays are same as 6 or 7 other relays and can be swapped).

Take a 10 ga wire, skin it in the middle attach another 10 ga wire to the skinned place, tape it up. Crimp male ends onto the three remaining ends. Relay has diagram on its side that differentiates the terminals for you and shows 30, 87, and either another 87 OR a terminal 87A.

Don't touch the green wire yet if the ends look to be intact. Ends are at the distributor and the pass fender at the spark controller (for lack of better term).

Your grounds are overdue cleaning. Its likely the one under the air valve might never have been cleaned by a mechanic because most folks don't know its there. Completely different than the 32V cars these guys usually work on.

At three years after refresh, if the car sees any moisture, its time to clean the panel and re-fuse it too.

Lots of things can cause no start, as mentioned. Begin with the simple stuff that creates a better base for getting it running and sustaining reliability. Green wire falls in that category, but unless somebody fiddled with it, probably not the problem today. When I bring home an LJet car, order gets placed immediately for thermo time, temp II and injection and fuel relays.

I also agree that the fuel pump fuse is important. I never just replace the fuses on these, without cleaning the spring terminals on the panel that contact the fuse. That's where dissimilar metal contact occurs. Yours is behaving as typical L-jet, pump runs for about a second. Would not hurt to clean/ re-fuse that one. I think its the only fuse on the panel that is critical for running on 84.

Default update

Had to be away for 2 days, just came home and decided to go out to the car to see if it starts.
Based on some info about relays if you let it cool down it may work so....
Key in and starts right away but it also dies right away just like last Sat.
So i tried again but this time it starts and ran.....drove home 6 miles everything normal, parked the car and restarts...normal!!
So the question is.....fuse is ok, would it be the fuel injection relay or fuel pump relay or both??
Can they be cleaned or just replace?

you can take the relay cover off and clean the contacts with some fine grit paper,
put some alcohol on a piece of paper and slide it between the contacts when your done to clean off the dirt.

this sounds like a bad relay,
BUT still if the green wire is original, order one and have it on hand, or just swap it in

Thanks Stan
I am going to try to clean the relays ( not done before ) and learn a little.
I will call Roger for the relays and green wire.

Car starts right up today and decided to go for a drive, 20 mins later, car just died, no start.
Called the tow truck but while i was waiting, i decided to try jumping the fuel pump relay but i jumped the wrong one, i jumped the xv111 in which its the ac condenser fan, now the fan comes on as soon as the key is turned? What did i do and how to fix that?
Got home and order my parts right away.
Thanks
Barry
