Default Front bumper swap?

Hey everybody, I've gotten a ton of help from you all in the past with my head gasket issues (currently mid fix) and had a question pop into my head that I thought you all might be able to answer. The front bumper on my 928 is a little messed up (read; completely destroyed) and I was wondering if it was possible to swap one of the cleaner looking bumpers from the newer models onto it? It basically looks like he used it to check the curb while parking a few too many times and the bottom part is completely ripped off. It had the rubber air dam in the front, but I prefer the looks of the bumper on the 1990 and newer sharks, is there any way to swap a bumper off one of those onto my 1984?

Only by cutting the 84 fenders at the bottom, (in front of the wheel well, below the sidemarker light) or by getting a fiberglass replica from AIR (American International Racing) that's made to fit the early cars.

Cheers!

No ... totally different configuration with different front fenders to suit. The later ones wrap further around the side to under the front section of the fender.

Rather than cut and shut the old fenders, you could probably just swap in the later front bumper and fenders with the accompanying hardware ... but that's a lot of work, and a front end paint job no matter which way you went.

These snips from PET show the difference in shape and fixing. Older one first then the later one below.

That actually looks pretty nice! I like that it doesn't have the beading around the edges. Just tight up against the other panel like on all modern cars.

Why don't you consider getting the later front bumper cover, (actually 87 and later are the same) and simply trim the aft edges to match your earlier fenders? You can graft some plastic onto the rear edges after they are trimmed to fit so that it will mount properly, or maybe even graft the rear edges off the earlier cover onto the later cover. I haven't done that (yet) but don't know why it wouldn't work. I have done some cutting and grafting of the rear cover to eliminate the bumperetts and to fill in the voids left by narrowing the opening for the license plate. Do a search here and you might find the thread I did about that, for some hints about the cutting and gluing on yours.

Pretty simple swap, IF you have the S4 bumper bar. lights, harnesses, trim. etc.

NO need to cut the fenders on the early 928, all you have to do is trim back that horizontal fender mounting flange to approx 1/8" (see yellow line in photo below) . Then use 3M Automotive double stick tape (same as used from factory or the S4 side sills etc) along that trimmed area(hence the 1/8" flange) and down the rearward edge where it meets the fender.

I have done 2 (or 3?) like this and it will look stock and easily reversed with no damage or mods to the early fenders etc.

Hope that helps,

Dave
