Well, this is my desperate plea for help. Been wrestling with this clutch and I feel like I must be missing something, would greatly appreciate any help via diagrams or moral support. Forgive me it's my first 928 and I am assembling from a box of parts.

Feel free to laugh at my pain, hopefully my time will come!

The throw-out bearing has pulled free from the pressure plate. Or you didn't put the bearing through the fingers before putting on the snap ring.

the way the 928 throwout bearing works is backwards from what your used to.
The slave cylinder actually pushes the release arm to the back of the car to release the clutch,
thus the TOB has to be inside the PP diaphragm to pull the fingers to release.
You have to take the clutch assembly out then remove the snap ring take off the curved metal collar,
fit the spring washer with the fingers facing to the face of the TOB or facing away from the PP fingers.
then put the PP over the center collar of the TOB then fit the curved ring then the snap ring.
here are some pictures in these link should answer your questions.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread but I also just installed a new clutch in my 79. I have heard and read (WSM) some adjustments on the intermediate plate. Is this applicable for 79? my intermediate plate did not seem to have any points for adjustment. Any and all help appreciated

before you adjust anything does the clutch operate correctly?
IE will it disengage and allow all the gears to be selected without grinding?
Does the car creep forwards with first gear selected and the pedal pushed to the floor?
if you answered yes yes and no,
then fill the tank and go for a drive your clutch is properly adjusted

Saw the larger late model front brakes too and am pretty impressed.

MrMerlin. Hard to engage first and reverse but it may be due to the wrong design master being installed, thanks!
Glenl, thank you as well. I will address the master and go from there
Sorry for the hi-jack
