Default preparing for 2 weeks worth of work on my 928

So far I've acquired info on my leaking rack and pinion. I will be replacing all the fuel lines which I will be putting clamps, also I need to get a new trans pan, I'm losing so much oil I'm getting tired, I'm sure I have a warped pan. Ima change my cooler lines as well, nd if i have money nd I will be purchasing the timing belt along with the water pump.

Anyone selling a good trans pan for an 84 928s auto, nd its USA??

Any additions yall would to advise me off?

Be patient, be ORGANIZED, take your time, and be sure to have all of the parts before you start. Trans pans are easy to replace. Definitely replace all of the cooler lines, I've lost a litre in 5,000 miles due to those things. Your leak is probably caused by them and or the old style pan gasket that cracks and leaks, get the new one made by MB not from Porsche, they still sell the old one that fails. Good luck

Yea I have my 2 weeks off from work in October and I'm buying piece by piece so I can get all my parts together. I have one that I bought from O'Reilly for my trans gasket, its the silicone kind, but it leaks I think worseeeeer then when I bought it, it could be my pan as well:-(

Call or e-mail Roger, he will have most everything you will need and is located in Texas so shipping should
be quick. Use genuine parts, I would be worried about a generic part from O'Reilly as you don't really know what you are getting.
Fix it before you damage the transmission, You don't want to have to remove it, unless you plan to R&D
the entire drive-train.

Most trans pans are damaged by folks who overtighten them to the body. Pull the old pan, clean it, and put it gasket-face down on a known flat surface (sink cutout from wife's granite kitchen counter project...). A feeler gauge is used as a test gauge, or you can cut strips of newspaper. Press down on the middle of the pan, and try to pull the newspaper strips out. Loose ones will help you ID warped areas. New pans are too cheap to make it worthwhile straightening any that are warped enough to leak, IMHO.

Use your torque wrench to do the tightening on the sump bolts. Even the Harbor Freight 1/4"-drive wrench at $10-15 is adequate for this job. Handy for the smaller bolts on the TB/WP job, particularly the water pump bolts. Remember it's in inch-pounds. Amazingly, 12 inch/lbs equals 1 foot/lb. Whoooda thunk such a thing?? Get the little drive adapter set when you buy the wrench so it will fit your 3/8-drive sockets.

I highly doubt a warped pan can be fixed, I know I need new parts:-(

Both gaskets are Mercedes parts, but the problem one 126 271 10 80 was superceded by the thicker 126 271 11 80.

I've just down the filter/tranny oil change. Always had a patch of trans oil (not pool but greasy patch) when left to stand in garage for a few days. Looking at service records before my ownership the were about 6 attempts to fix this! Sometimes the report said something like "tightened sump gasket" which I imagine made it worse!

I found that the service kit I'd bought ages ago which had a 2006 date still had the superceded gasket, but I fitted it anyway rather than delay the job further, and was really careful with torque wrench and zig-zag even tightening. I also changed reservoir seal, and suction tube o-ring.

Not a sign of any leak so far (2 days). Just hope the "old" gasket holds up without splitting prematurely.

Other way round - you need the 11.

The suspect 10 part was in service kit Porsche put together 12 years after original Mercedes service bulletin!

I may be lucky and it will not leak, but you should get the 11 part and at least almost eliminate risk of gasket leak so long as you tighten bolts correctly

As already said you need 126 271 11 80 and I sell for $9.
