Default Two best repairs

I don't post often, but I wanted to pass on two repair/adjustments that have been the most rewarding over the last thirteen years on my 1986.5

(1) Bowden cable adjustment. The right shift points makes our 928s come alive.

(2) Battery ground cable replacement. A new battery cable fixed: Low volt meter readings, Engine surges, high idle and stalling. Improved the kick down switch function and it also fixed my stereo performance.
Your ground strap may look ok But chances are it is corroded under it's insulation. Mine looked perfect even under the insulation but it had hidden corrosion thus raising the resistance.

I suggest that if you have electrical issues replace your ground strap first. Then start your trouble shooting. It could save you a lot of time and money.

The degradation usually takes place near the battery for this is where the acidic vapors will linger.

Always a good idea. But not infallible, unfortunately. I have had the battery vented outside the well since I got the car (at 22k and ~9 years after it was built), and I was in denial for a long time about the deterioration of strap.

So replace the strap, add the vent, but be aware that this is not a one-time maintenance item. In another 20 years or so, I'll be doing this again if I'm still around.

Agreed dr bob. Though I added a vent to partially mitigate, I just about consider it a wear item because of what it is continuously exposed to.

Would you please share how you made this vent? Pics would be nice too, though I know you said your camera is done for.

After reading this thread tonight, I searched around some for "Battery Vent" and came up empty. Dr Bob mentioned adding a hose to a "Type 48 Battery", which I presume has an attachment point for a vent hose, like a motorcycle battery.
My battery doesn't have a hose attachment, and I think venting that small, fairly tight compartment would be a good idea.

I'm open to suggestions/ideas as to how to do that.

We have the battery ground straps for $28.25 each - worth every cent compared to the factory strap for $70.

Imagine how much better my car ran after replacing this one.

Had cleaned and recleaned and recleaned the end.

Got better for a while, each time.

Not sure why, but at Frenzy 4 or 5 years ago I dissected it.

The best I could do to vent the chamber was the following. I got some orange heater hose about 1 inch OD. I chose this hose for it is durable and thin walled to allow for the best air exchange for its OD. I drilled small guide hole on the fore face of the battery chamber a little above the level of my battery terminals. I then got a grommet in the hole and 'squeegeed' the hose thru so it was tight. I then added some black gasket maker to each side of the hose/grommet interface. I like the way it bonds in somewhat of a flexible fashion (from prior experience with it) for with the hose bouncing over the same bumps I drive over, the union should not be brittle. I left about 1.5 to 2 inches of hose in the chamber, with about 3 - 4 inches outside. The hose is thin walled and droops down just the way I wanted. Don't consider going out the Left side of the battery chamber. I felt the heat from the muffler didn't need to find an avenue in to the battery chamber. Nothing extravagant about it. I use a clear suction tubing to go from the battery through this tube to vent. I want to insure the tube would not kink as well as not sever on the sharp edge of the battery case.

Got it. Just a simple tube going through the front of the box.

As you say, nothing extravagant, but better than nothing.

Roger, is this 2 or 4 gauge cable? Shrink wrapped or bare braid?
