Hey guys looking forward to Sharktober Fest!!
So here is the issue. With my 85 928 When getting off the freway or slowing down from speeds of 50mph i keep getting a gas smell in the cab??? This is something new that just started. I have check and replaced all bad gas lines that i could find. Im thinking that i have a vacuum issue with the vent in the tank or some issue with the vapor recovery system??? any way im looking for ides of things to check
Has anyone had this issue before?

check your plastic "y" hose connector under the passenger fender well cover. It is right by the washer fluid fill hose that connects the fill nozzle in the engine compartment with the washer fluid tank in the passenger wheel well. They are known to break and can cause the gas smell

Because chicken wings and turtle soup does not have beans and we all know that:
Beans, beans, the musical fruit
The more you eat, the more you toot
The more you toot, the better you feel
So we have beans at every meal!

The beans have it!
So anyway, back to the discussion - Jeff gives a good lead to start with. If it is the plastic Y connector, replace it with an updated metal one available from the Big 3 (I believe).

I have allready replaced that fun little line thats "u" shaped at the back of the motor by the fire wall. It was cracked but was not leaking at the time i replaced it but was deffently time to be replaced. i will lhave to check into the "Y" connector... So if im reading this right the gas tank vents into the windo washer tank? if thats the case my washer tank is cracked and no longer holds fluid... i will now have to replace the tank to fix this issue?
The tank has been bad from day one that i brought the car home and i have been driving it for three years with no gas smell till recently??? If thats the cause thats odd but will check this weekend anyway.

Not sure how long ago you replaced the fuel lines but it is a good and critical practice to go back and check the hose clamps for tightness and fitment.
Also, the Y connector mentioned is behind the right fender well. The plastic dries up and crumbles. The U connector at the FW is a different and critical piece.
Good luck!

No, it doesn't vent into the washer tank ... the 'y' piece referred to is in that vicinity under the fender. It's connected to a carbon canister which absorbs fuel vapours after shut down, and is also connected to the motor vacuum which purges the vapours while running. If you do a search you should find a pic of it, or someone else may be able to post ... I can't look until later but I'll check back here.

To get to the Y connector remove the RF wheel then fender liner,
this Y plastic hose junction should be residing just under the washer tank fill tube.
NOTE since you will be working in the same location as the washer tank,
now is a good time to remove the transfer hose its black about 1 1/2 in diameter,
and then remove the tank,
and the metal collars in the washer fill tube and the tank inlet then flush out the tank this will remove all of the rust from the metal collars dont overtighten the transfer tube clamps when refitting

If you smell gas coming in the vent. Check the oring on the injectors. I had one leak with a little smell. Then it gave way later that day and dumped gas out all over the engine. Lucky I killed the engine when I smelled gas and pulled over. I popped the hood and it was dumping gas all over the hot engine. I was on a back road so I just sat and watched the gas just boil off the engine. No fire but it sure could have been a big one. Problem fixed with new orings. This time ordered the OEM orings vs the orings suggested and included by the injector vendor.
