Setting up headlights correctly
#16
Fred before you do any adjusting of the limit stops .
Can you describe exactly what you did to your car prior to the lamps not functioning correctly.
As a point of reference my 88 S4 worked fine then every once in a while the lamps would cycle to a slightly higher than normal position,
this was followed by the lamps coming up and and not illuminating.
A new used relay cured the issues,
So its quite possible that your relay may be sticky or one of the contacts inside it is dirty,
I would start there instead of making adjustments.
also check the motor and the link arm bolts are tight as one of these parts could have moved and changed the alignment,
but clean the relay first, and make sure its the correct relay

By some fluke, it seemed I had two coincidental problems- one the relay and the other, one of the supply cables to the actuator motor had a faulty connection.
I changed the relay to the one I had in my bag of spares from my late 90 S4- it has a different part number - Alan advised it should work OK so I tried it and that seems to be the case. To fix the motor problem I initally fitted my spare actuator motor from the S4 and when I had fixed the orignal GTS motor unit put that back.
The only thing I disturbed mechanically was the fitment of the actuator arm on the motor gearbox output shaft. I did not mark the original engagement position before disassembly and perhaps that was a mistake.
I also seem to remember that whilst re-assembling it, I had the lights in the up position whilst disconnected and it fell back under gravity- perhaps that did something- for sure I was disgusted with my self for allowing it to happen but it was not a gut wrenching type of event.
To reposition I ran the motor until it stopped in the fully up position, held the headlamps in the fully upright position and then connected the splines assuming that was the correct position.
The one thing I did not want to do was connect it in such a way that it wanted to travel further than the emchanism allows it to thus damaging something.

Fred
