Haven't had a whole lot of time to work on the 79 lately but I do plan on doing the clutch this weekend. I also ordered a new fuel accumulator as it looks to have been leaking for some time. May be partially responsible for my warm startup issues

She's sitting in the garage back at home for the moment. She is primed, wet sanded, and ready for paint, but I'm currently a long ways away in Denmark until the middle of December. So she's in hibernation again for the winter. My father went and took her for a quick spin however - guess she still runs as good as ever. Will be great to have the car done and put back together!

Managed to sneak in 2 hours of work last night. I removed the flywheel, pilot bearing and rear main seal and replaced the seal and bearing. Job was very straightforward. Old seal pried out very easily, new seal took a little persuasion. I used the flywheel to get it pressed in and finished it with some taps of a hammer. The bearing came out without too much trouble but I had to modify the harbor freight puller as it was too big and too long to use comfortably. New bearing went in the freezer overnight and pressed into place easily with a hammer and large socket (used as a drift). Flywheel is also back on and torqued. Clutch should go in shortly. Wish I had a lift at my house

Clutch is going in tomorrow, had an hour so I knocked out a new fuel accumulator and filter. This was a fairly easy job. My old accumulator has fuel in the top half and was leaking out the small screw on the top. The mid pipe between the two was a bear to get out. I remove the two as an assembly and separated it on the bench. Hidden behind this whole assembly is a small plastic check valve on the return line.

Thanks! I got the clutch installed yesterday. Couldn't get the car to run well enough for testing but I do know that it will not engage reverse. Grinds badly.
Which brings me to my next problem.....
I need to learn all about CIS. Gonna order a set of gauges from Roger. This car ran great when first started weeks ago but it seems to getting progressively worse now. Very hard to start even harder to keep running. Apply the gas and she dies. I figure I will get it running well then re address the clutch.

Guy, give it a huge dose of StabiL fuel stabilizer and run it to get the possible large amounts of varnish out of the system. I use it regularly in my modern vehicles. The stuff really cleans fuel injection systems well and most people only use it when putting a car away for the winter.

Learned a lot over the past two days of reading the forum, most importantly.......
I have a 9 inch booster (which I always suspected) and therefore the clutch master I used has the longer piston which is not allowed the release of the clutch fully. After I sort out the engine, I will pull the piston and make the appropriate mod (I believe its to be cut 4.5mm). Then if I still have the problem engaging reverse, I will try readjusting the intermediate plate. I may have to drop the whole assembly again as I don't believe I lubed it enough on installation. Thoughts?

Just an update. I now have the car running and driving! Lots of little clogs needed clearing in the fuel system and I swapped out the clutch master piston with the early style. Was able to easily engage first and reverse!!! It is a happy day!!!

Hi Guys! Been busy working on the 79 but not posting.
I had difficulty getting the car to run consistently well. Decided to address vacuum, injectors and fuel distributor since it all needed to be done anyway. I had about five pounds of acorns hidden under the CIS assembly!! I simply can't believe how easy this job was. I am now going to get this right once and for all. Roger supplied most of the gaskets and vac lines. I already had genuine Porsche EGR lines in color in stock. The FD is off to be rebuilt. Here is the engine without intake. I don't have a steam cleaner here at home so I will hit it all once the car is assembled and running. Still having a ball with this car. I have done a lot of restorations, but this one is by far the most entertaining
