At last, sweet sound of silence !
After too many years of futzing around, I tried what someone posted the other day and replaced the two black rubber bumpers under either end of the hatch. Smooth road, rough road, speed bumps, turns ... finally, no more squeaking and creaking coming from back there!
Best part, just $1.75 ea from my favorite part supplier. How often do you get that much satisfaction on a 928 task for $3.50?

Good to hear - I've got some in a parcel from Roger in transit now.. package just arrived in Australia today according to tracking
I also bought new rubber pucks for the radiator supports - I decided that the old ones are so heat hardened and solid that in the interests of protecting my radiators, I should get new squishy ones

I'm not sure if there is a better way to do this, but i found you can check the buffer adjustment (how far in to screw it) by going inside the car when hatch is shut and looking to see if they are resting on the pads below.

I wish I could enjoy the "sound of silence" but instead I am struggling with squeaks... strangely enough the squeaks in my S4/MY88 happen only when the car is warm and has benn drive for a short while... then the concert starts at each road bump or even when turning and loading the right side suspensions... I have not been able to locate the source of the squeak which is so loud that can be clearly heard from outside the car (I did check by riding with windows down)... I did stop the car and cheched the shock absorbers by lading each of the corners of the car pushign with my own weight and I could not hear any squeack at all and shock absorbers seem ok. I did check the exhaust by kicking the terminal and again no noise... I had the car lifted once and together witht he mechanic we attempted to lube some of the back suspension joints with no results nor improvements. I repeat, the squeaks happen only after the car has been warmed up and driven for a short while... I wonder if somethign related to the radiant heat from the catalitic converter or engine softening or losing some plastic/rubber bushing somewhere??? Any hints will be appreciated

I had the most annoying rattle coming from the L rear seat. Would occur when going slow such as cruising into a red light. The resonant frequency of the engine purr would cause it to develop. If I were driving, I could not locate it. Had my daughter drive with me in the back. The sound was from the rattling of the L rear seat handle/escutcheon. The stalk that holds the piece that can be removed would vibrate against the channel's frame at a high frequency. I didn't want to attempt surgery on it for I did not know what I was going to get in to. My fix was cutting some black Gorilla tape into a strip who's width was the same length as the shaft. I wrapped it around the shaft to the appropriate size and the rattle is gone and handle function not encumbered.

Installed new bumpers and tape and still have squeak. When I extend the bumpers enough to limit the noise the hatch will not open when using the switch next to the seat, just "spins". The hatch will open using the key. Any suggestions?

Dave,
If all else fails, intall a new hatch seal. You will litterally have to SLAM the hatch to shut it. I replaced on my 79 a few years back and ALL rattling stopped..
One more thing. Do you still have your rear wiper? If so, there should be a small rubber bumper separating the 2 arms of the wiper. It usually crumbles and falls off, replace that as well.
Good luck!
