My local wrench had one in for a major service a few months ago, and suggested that for an extra $1k he could do the IMS bearing - No thanks said the owner. A few months later...it blew. Now its going to cost $10k to fix and get all the debris out of the oil system.

Once the bearing lets go the engine is toast. A new one from porsche is $22K. Usually the damage is so severe that rebuilding one is not possible. A good used engine is around $8K. Not all bearimgs are servicable, at some point Porsche made the putter race bigger than the openning and the case needs to be split. I've replaced mine with a hybrid ceramic unit that cost $100. Some custom parts had to be made to make it work but so far (10K km) been working well. There is lots of discussion on this on the 996 and boxter forums.

Jim - not from Richmond; got it near Tacoma. Rick - you're on brother

As to the IMS, I now know as much about it as I do the TBF issue we have. I researched it quite extensively before buying. The ppi shop did an oil analysis, not just for meatal but also for plastic and rubber, which are tell tale signs. Also studied the oil filter. Engine is clean, so I feel comfortable until this winter, where it will go in for the LN upgrade. About $1800 job locally, but cheap insurance in my view. From 2009 on the issue seems to have been resolved. Mine's an 03.

Damn, the thing is fun to drive. One thing that surprised me though, it weighs about the same as Blumaxx. They aren't tiny, and our sharks aren't whales (at least the early ones).

one other thing - I found the Dwayne of Boxsters! Thank God (Pedros Garage - full pictorial tutorials); I will do as much of the routine stuff as I can myself - it is unsettling to open both ends and not see any engine at all!

It's fun when someone wants to see the engine and you open the front trunk and they laugh knowingly, then you open the rear and ...

Reminds me of the Jaw dropping experience (his) I had with the neighborhood know it all when he was checking out my new 914-4 back in 1970.

That's a nice color combo Linderpat. Congratulations. They are great cars. I'm going to look at a 2003 with only 6,000 miles later this afternoon.

You will never get used to the dependability of these cars. They actually saved Porsche from going under. Do not stress the IMS issue, you could get struck by lighting too?! The mid-engine handling around the apex of a curve will always win over the heavy, squarrelly 911. Enjoy the 150+ mph pretty easily too.

Year for year my 928 was more reliable than my 02 Boxster. In the 5 years I owned it I put new oil in twice a year, new clutch line, clutch master cylinder, both door locks, both window regulators, ignition switch, all 4 control arms, new rotors and pads, AOS, and redid the seal at the oil filler tube because it started leaking oil randomly from the top of the case. My 928 never gave me that many issues. My only gripe with the 986 was it was designed to reduce the cost of manufacture, not for long term reliability. Component quality was below Porsche standards IMHO, too much plastic instead of metal.

Oh and my now mini S performs just as well as my Boxster did. Thought I'd miss it more than I did. 928 still in the stable though.

Lighten up tough guy, that kind of an attitude doesn't go very far around here.

Besides, you should be proud of your profession, hair stylists have their place in the world along with everyone else.
