Yeah, I was amazed at the crap down there too.

Just as a matter of interest, it's not clear if you actually bought it or if it's been delivered.

I think I might have to do what Hilton suggests and call Roger. I'll take it out of the car and check just how bad the damage is on the weekend.

There must be a market niche here for refurbished rads. I checked the Hella site and it says the 928 models are no longer available.

I wish you luck with your PSD. Porsche here in London quoted me silly prices for some bits and said other bits, including the wheel arch liner and support strut, were no longer available.

Yes it's bought delivered and installed. I didn't actually notice until today that it has BEHR stamped on it and then Behr Hella on the sticker. As I though, Behr and Hella are the same manufacturer basically. I checked the Hella site and there was 3 options, 2 are no longer available and 1 is being discontinued. Design911 had to order it from Hella as they didn't have it in stock, so Hella were still selling them a week a go.

I've found a new Hella rad for £400. Unfortunately, it's for an '89 S4. P/N 928.106.04301. Apparently the version for the '90 S4 is P/N 928.106.04203. I notice from the PET specs that the earlier version incorporates an additional oil cooler.

Are they in theory interchangeable?

You can use that in your car. It has an extra engine oil cooler that you can just block off. Starting in '90, the engine oil cooler in the radiator was deleted and an external cooler was added under the radiator.

Mike,
I suspect by now that this is mission impossible but I'll take one last shot.

How did you manage to get the rad from Design911 for the original price? There's another UK web site listing it for £398 inclusive but when I ordered and paid for it they claim it's no longer available.

Do they have some statutory obligation to supply it at the listed price? What was your strategy to hold them to the deal?

Design911 were advertising it on their website at that price and so I guess they sold it to me for the price that was advertised.

Looking at my radiator the part number is 8MK 376 711-561. If I search the hella online catalogue then that returns no results. If I search by my car type I get 8MK 376 711-551

Here is the stamp on my radiator and this is the link to the Hella catalogue http://webshop-cs.tecdoc.net/hella/home.jsp

thanks Mike,
8MK 376 711-551 is also what I found out.
As you said, 8MK 376 711-551 is marked as "to be discontinued"

Weird about the part number. There used to be a single difference in the second position in the up to MY12.89 part numbers, differentiating manual vs auto (i.e. 8MK 376 710-731 vs 8MK 376 710-721)

Oliver,

Just as a matter of interest, what are your plans?

AutoKool had the duel oil cooler version for £398 on their site.

Do Hella/Behr sell direct to the public? Can Design911 guarantee to supply?

All very vague.

Relatives in Germany reckons he's found a Hella/Behr 8MK 376 711-551 for the equivalent of £500.

Mine was working fine when I removed it 18months ago (my progress happens at slo-mo speed) but who knows what happens when it is eventually on the road again. At this stage I am trying to future proof.

Here's an interesting part number cross reference.

Well, what a saga!!!

My radiator pressure cooker problem had blown the thing apart and it was clear I needed a replacement. So, apart from Porsche UK and Euro Car Parts, both quoting £1700, the only other possibilities in the UK were apparently AutoKool and Design911.

I paid the £398 to AutoKool online but they immediately emailed to say they couldn't deliver and refunded the money.

Like Mike, I tried Design911 but their price had gone up to over £600. What choice did I have? I bought it and they generously offered a 10% discount. But when it turned up it wasn't a Behr/Heller. It was an AdRad. And it was a duel oil cooler version. When I phoned to complain they said that's all they had, unless I was prepared to pay £1300 for the Porsche version.

Oh well, what could I do?

But yesterday they called to say they'd found a single oil cooler version and were happy to swap. It arrived this morning and, guess what, it's a Behr/Heller. Amazing!

As far as I can ascertain, apart from the AdRad I swapped, the only rads for the 928 in the UK now cost well over a grand. Can this be reasonable?

We get full aluminum radiators built out here for the equivalence of $600, and they are a perfect fit. I have had one in my DD for the last 2 years and it's just been great. It's exactly the same dimensions except the actual core is a little bit thicker, so it takes up more of the recessed space at the front and the rear. The cooling capacity is increased by about 10% (in theory).

Yeah Phil, I looked into that.

928 Motorsports want $828 for my version and I imagine with the shipping to the UK it would work out about the same.
