Oddly, my '89 S4 5-speed is #1141; made after some GTs came off the line.

Hi Rob.

When they started making the GT late in the Model year for the 89, in March 89, they also continued to make 5 speed S4s that were not GTs. It was not until the model year 90 that they dropped the 5 speed S4 and from then on, through 91, all the 5 speeds were GTs. The 89 S4 in GT trim had an option code of 639 to designate it as GT, but I don't know if the 90 and 91 have such a code.

It is suggested in the 928 Registry that they made the 89 GTs from March 89 thru June 89. What I find odd is that my recently acquired early 90 GT was made in April 89 which means that it was made right along with the 89 GTs that were being made up to June 89. Making two different versions of the GT at the same time is really odd to me because they have more differences than just the wheels.

Is $19,000 too much? I honestly thought I'd have some action on this car by now.

I think it's priced right...but you'll need to wait to get that guy looking for the 89GT..... If you want a quick sale..then you'll likely have to price accordingly... and get someone who doesn't necessarily want an 89GT..but certainly wouldn't mind one ..

Good luck with the sale..

I would love to have that car. it is the one I actually want. Sadly I just picked up a 90GT and am enjoying it immensely.I agree that that price would have to wait for the right buyer. If I had a buyer for 19k for mine I would do the swap right now. Mine has everything working including the A/C and I would have to take a while to get 19k for it. At 13 -15k I could get rid of it quickly....

For me I would have the bolster addressed and get the right cargo net or remove it - but that is just me.

It should sell at that price, if you put a little work into the sales process.

Check out Rob Edwards' thread and ebay ad for his 90GT.. you need to have a similar number of pictures of car and documentation, info on work done etc. Also having the car professionally detailed will help, as would getting a seat touch-up guy to improve that bolster. IIRC Rob sold for $22k.

'89 GT is in some ways more desireable than later cars - its the closest to the clubsport spec, with the GT engine, mechanical diff, no airbags etc.

I think your price is about right but you'll need to put a bit of effort/money into getting it.

I think that is to nice of a car to have seats in that condition. If you have the time and money I believe a qaulity recover might be a good investment for resale. At least maybe look into some options for a repair job in the bad areas.

Its the weird economy, plenty of people buy $50k to $100k cars, while the middle of America keeps the old car running cheap as long as they can.

5 spd makes the GT special, but something like 80% of buyers want an AT.

BTW Rob's car was a total steal at his price, apples and oranges.
