NooB Member.Practically Visibly Excited about my 89 S4!
Hey gang Nice to meet you. Last weekend while at Irvine Cars N Coffee (I go about 3 Saturdays out of four) Just got my Satrbucks cup 'O Joe and a black 928 catches my eye, guy has just parked and is placing a FS sign on the dash. Prolly $20K plus and outta my league ... But wait, it's a bit less than that and *sort of* in my price range so I ask the guy(Steven) to tell me about this gorgeous car! He's 3rd owner, sounds like the 2nd owner was less than ideal in the upkeep and maintenance department and Steven has spent the last 3 years and roughly $15K (found this out later digging thru the reciepts) bringing it back to very respectable conditon Now I've loved 928's since I first laid eyes on them but when I saw my first S4 in 87 or 88 I was awestruck by it So here is one I can actually own if I rearrange a few other priorities (like eating for the next few months, heck, I need to shed a few lb's anyway) Everywhere I look the car is clean, scratch that, WAY better than clean. In fact I can hardly find any faults with it, even the repaint tho obvious is very good. new suspension, new brakes, reconditioned interior, lotsa new hoses/rubber underhood(needs more attention there tho) This thing is an 8.5 out of 10. It's kinda surreal but 5 minutes after meeting this car, I'm making an offer $500. under asking price and he accepts Te deal is set he is to show up at my house less than 5 miles from where he lives in an hour with a ride home and a clean title and if the test drive goes well, I'll hand him a thick stack of $100 bills and thank him profusely! It did, it does and it's mine!!!I'm a happy fourtysomething first time Porsche owner
So after 6 hours of cleaning/detailing/fluid checking/generally inspecting I'm ready for the first real drive. Up to temp, a nice wide open road, lets see what happens if I push the loud pedal all the way to the floor for 15 or so seconds And that's when I broke my new car Not big time, but she does have a miss now(and an audible chime alarm THAT WONT GO OFF but I suspect that is a separate issue. The owners manual and a couple Porsche owner buds of mine can't think of anything that would elicit a continuous bing-bing-bing-bing alarm whenever the key is in the run positon, engine on or not. Hmm, minor setback, not gonna rain on my parade. Fortunately for me in the folder of reciepts there are a few from a local company http://www.precisionmtrwerks.com/ and as I come to find out after a visit a couple days later, Greg, Mary and crew live/eat/breath 928's! Greg is The Man and exceedingly generous with tips, tricks, and specialized knowledge garnered by 30+ years of working on them. They have a customer for life! They are helping me thru the most likely culprits that would cause the miss (no aberant guages or warning lights BTW) If I could afford to just drop the car at Precision for diagnosis/repair, I would but after overextending myself on the purchase price, I'm gonna try to solve this one using my labor and their guidance. This is gonna be a fun journey...

Welcome to the group.
You need some of the specialized tools required for fixing a 928, most important is called a VISA.
Greg was the place to start prior to purchase with a full inspection, and still should be your first stop. The 89 has a diagnostic port on the computer, Greg has the Bosch box that talks to them. My advice is to at least have Greg do a basic inspection, look at the new user sticky at the top of the forum, read me first or something like that and do all the PPI stuff that you can, then have Greg do the rest. You need a baseline before wading in too deep.
Realistically you are going to need a few thousand to catch up maintenance even if you do all the labor yourself, and some of it really should not be put off unless you stop driving.

AJ,
Congratulations! Looks like a great car!
This place is a great resource. Be sure to read the "new member" thread at the top and don't hesitate to start a thread asking for help-- lots of folks here like to play "stump the chump". Post details, including what you've checked, and --most import-- follow up on the advice and suggestions. Even if it doesn't fix the problem, the feedback is useful to narrow down the possibilities.
So this miss, is it continuous, like only ever running on 7 cylinders? Or really bad, like running on one bank only? (The S4+ ignition is split, half the cylinders on each coil/distributor). Or does it miss only occasionally, like when you put your foot in it?
Step one I think would be to pull the plugs and have a look, if one cylinder is consistently missing then that will show as one plug that didn't look like the others. Posting pic's is good.
Cheers, Jim

Welcome to the Shark tank! I can't help you too much on the engine problem, but if the "alarm" sound you hear is the kind of dinging you hear when you have a door open, the likely problem is a fuse which is located behind your center console (under your radio). It's a rectangular box shape with a bunch of holes on the top (assuming it's the same as the one on my '84). Just take off the console side panel on the driver's side of the console and you should be able to see it. Just pull it out and that should eliminate the sound (at least that worked for me).
Have fun with the car! It's addictive.

If the previous owner is located near you, you may want to ask his advice, suggestions, etc... It may be something he's dealt with before and knows the solution. Other than that, if you've got an experienced 928 shop nearby (sounds like you do) definitely spend the cash to have a full Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) even if you've already bought it... The report back will be worth whatever it costs cause you'll KNOW whats right, whats wrong and where to start first! Afterwards, the guys on here can help you figure out most 928 related issues. Welcome to the Shark Tank!! Enjoy the car!!!

When I picked up my GTS in LA, it came with a thick folder of receipts from the only previous owner. Unfortunately, none of the receipts were from Precision Motorwerks. I rectified that situation on the way out of town and before I began the trek eastward across the desert. I do now have a single receipt in my file from Greg Brown's shop. You could not take your car to a better shop than Precision Motorwerks.
Congratulations on your purchase!
