This type of research is what I do prior to any car purchase and I encourage anybody else to do the same.
If he can document why a $16k premium is being commanded through restoration, receipts, etc, than he has a solid argument. If the pricing delta is simply because it passed through his ownership, then the story is different.
I'm glad threads like this exist so innocent buyers don't get conned on what market values really are.

And with all due respect, where you and I live it won't be a 928 changing hands at 50K.

Since the car in question came out of an estate sale, the transaction value is public record and receipt issued along with title assignation..... No place to hide the value on this deal.
