Another for sale thread in the 928 forum....
I guess if you don't show up to every gathering and not really know anyone in the 928 community, people are going to trash talk your car in your for sale thread...
I have seen the car a couple of times in person, once in third coast and once in one of the GTGs here.
I think its a nice original low mileage 928 that has been garage kept most of its life. I think it looks better in person specially with an unusual exterior color like that. Definitely a unique late model 928 with spoiler delete option. I think landseer has a similar optioned car like this one too.
Its funny how 928 owners talk down the value of other 928s for sale and make negative comments. You guys need to realize that outsiders will use the internet to search about value of a used car before they buy one, especially if their thinking about buying an old Porsche. When they find threads like this it discourages them from buying a 928. In the end you are hurting your own 928s value in the future.
In the E30 M3 forum they actually have a sticky on top stating to not trash talk other members for sale threads. If you start dissing a for sale car your post gets deleted. Maybe we need something like that for the 928 forum?
Today someone just put their 1990 E30 M3 for sale that the owner has done a lot of work on, the thing has over 200K miles on it and has things like engine rebuilt done to it, and a few other non original mods. But it needs a complete paint job and a few other little things. His asking 35,000 $ for it.
While very nice, perfect, lower mileage (around ~50K to ~100K miles) all original examples can be had for his asking price, not a single sole said anything about the price, all they said was "GLWTS" or "Can we see pics", "these cars are going up in value", etc.
But here you hear negative comments all the time (not going to quote anyone here, you know what comments I'm talking about, the ones you always see in the 928 for sale threads).
I think there should be a rule that if you start talking crap your post gets deleted. Unless you know something very wrong with the car that was not disclosed in the for sale add, like a serious mechanical problem or undocumented accident history.
The seller on this thread should actually report some of the post in this thread for deletion, because in no way they add anything of importance or value for the sale of his car or for future reference. Trolling is what it is...

We discuss value here to prevent people from being taken, like you were with the block from WW. Had that spade been callled a spade properly, that wouldn't have happened.
The potsie weber car would have been a nightmare for somebody if it wasn't "outed".
There are several that weren't called out, and it still hurts to think of the pain inflicted because the value was false, but attested-to in a rennlister circle jerk. Not talking about crapshoots where a 30 year old car simply broke, but instead about cars with known deficiencies not disclosed to new buyers.
Not drinking that Kool Aid anymore.
Don't know anything about this particular car. Don't care. I'm responding to the attempts to stifle the very important market value discussions that need to be held here on parts and cars.

It didn't take very long on here for me to figure out a realistic value for these cars. That allowed me to make a reasonable, but fair offer for the one I got. I still probably paid a little over what real market value was/is, but with what my PO had spent on it, I'm ok with that.
And it doesn't take too long to see what these cars are worth (and it's not all that much). Look at Andre's car. It has registration issues for any buyer, but it's a great car and it isn't moving at it's current price. There was recently a red 84 that didn't go for 9k, then not for 8k, then the owner decided to keep it. There was a high mile, but very well kept one in Illinois that was considered low priced at $7500, but didn't sell before it received minor damage in a hit & run and had the price reduced. I don't know if it sold yet or not.
There was a very nice 85 Euro that went for about $14k. And a beautiful Granite green 88 that went for the high teens.
All of these are RLers who know the real value of the car. Not high priced, and not terribly low.
The insanity is when you see something like this 85. Very nice, very well kept, but not perfect, and certainly not rare. And 40k isn't that low of miles. 25k is low. 15 is very low. Those kind of numbers might warrant a price near $30k. But that car isn't worth it as it sits. The line in the ad "you can pay 20k for a car that will need $15k in work to equal this car" tells me the owner is out of touch with reality.
A decent car that only needs some work is easily found for $7k or $8k.
And the real insanity is the junk out there. Non-running for $8k or more. Totally trashed for $4k. The "Restorer's Dream" that was priced at $8k with a bent body that ended up going for $1500 because it had a good interior (now being parted out).
Having a resource that can help a newer buyer not get screwed is an asset to these cars.

Its low from your side to come here and hint how much he actually paid for the car. I'm sure if he had his car at your place numerous times to work on, you wouldn't have come here with your bull****. Instead you would have said how great of a car it is.

So, back to your bull****.

Actually Ali, you can't be more wrong on that aspect. The reasons I stopped working on this car was not the owners decision. I know exactly what is not perfect with this car and have not brought it up. Simple fact of the matter is, he is so out of the ball park on what the car is worth it is laughable. I don't deal well with people trying to rip others off, as you well know.
So, back to your bull****.

I have noting more to say in this thread so if you have more bull**** to say go ahead have at it ....

The original post I made was not really aimed at this particular car if you read the whole thing. I did make a few points on how every time a thread shows up with a 928 for sale people just talk down on the car. It has become a thing of habit around here. So maybe you need to work on your reading comprehension.

The efficient market. Heh - funny thing is, the market is so much more efficient today than it was 25 years ago. Back then, a guy had to spend days/weeks looking at ads in magazines, newspapers, calling around, and generally blow a lot of time and money on ad papers. Now - with a few clicks anyone from the rankest amateur can appraise a car in a matter of an hour.
Let's be realistic. No one here wants to OVERpay for a car. No one here wants to spend more of their OWN money for a product. We all want the best deal we can get for our money. Sure, some people have different specifics, but the fact is, the market in used cars is extremely efficient. No one gets the 'barn find' 250GTO Ferrari anymore for a song. The one's you hear about are mostly BS.
I have no opinion on this car, cause I've never seen it. A 1985 for anything over $25k should be grade 1, near immaculate and it should also have a full provenance, including service history, ownership, and a celebrity owner in the past would help. Barring that, you can take a fixer 85 and spend $20k on it and have a damn nice car if you don't mind doing some work yourself.

Most of us know the market value because we shop for these cars 3 times a week or more, plus see them actually change hands and know the real transfer price.
Not going to hold back on that view.
What's more embarassing and damaging is the reverse. Watching as cars are touted and talked up, by a group think crew of very knowledgeable guys, to neophyte potential owners at premium prices. Its especially questionable when key stuff is hidden, like thousands of miles of blower miles and thrashing, followed by a clever scrub to make it look stock.
Not buying that BS, nor standing-by while others mislead.

Realistic discussions on cars regarding conditions and values are what car guys do all day long in any internet forums, auction houses, car dealerships, and etc. Disagreeing on prices and pointing out issues of a particular car constitutes potential slander and libel??? Really.

I will say that the values on rennlist to not reflect the actual market, in many ways, high and low. People many times will pay more, or less for a car that is found on CL or somewhere else.

I don't give this list that much credit for affecting the "market", this is a relatively small group compared to the 15,000 (or so) 928's still breathing. But the 928 is way undervalued. 308's at 40K 911's at 25K from the same time is a joke. Both inferior in every way. 928 has a bad rap for whatever reason and a lot of misinformation around it. Whatever

I don't see any of the price defenders here writing a check yet.
Bueller,Bueller,Bueller...
There is a very good way for the market to respect the 928. All it takes is for those of you who think they are undervalued to start writing big checks. Something tells me they would like to spend OPM. After all, that's the American way - right?
