I received my kit for the '85 last week and the quality is great jus like the door speakers
Thanks for the photos and notes about longer screws.
I was thinking that the original "shorter" screws could be re purposed to mount the speakers to the adapters, yes?
Also, the adapters do not press down onto the speaker grills and I was thinking of adding something to shim them as I want the stock grills supported from behind.

How did you deal w/ this, maybe Han's can comment on the fittment and if that gap is needed.

Thank you,

Dave

Yes on the shorter screws. The speaker has a plastic trim ring on the front. It just pops right off. Then the adapter mounts on the speaker with the groove facing the speaker. That trim ring though me off at first also.

Thank you, and yes I removed the trim ring and the speaker fits nicely into the adapter.
What I'm having an issue w/ is the adapter fitting up against the metal grills on the inside of the stock covers. There is a 1/4" or more gap as the adapters sit on the four posts and do not rest on the grills.
This would allow the grills to move inward if pressed on once installed.

Thanks,

Dave

I may have done this wrong but I put the adapters on
the backside of the speaker.
That moved the speaker out from the body a little
bit, and also filled that gap between the speaker
and the grill.

Got you Dave. What I did was glue the grill to the cover.
Dadio, the adapter goes on the front. You'll want that added space for speaker travel.

Cool, I was thinking of hot gluing and maybe adding some foam rubber (a ring) around them, made from some similar material as the aftermarket Hood liners.

So we are certain that the space is required for proper speaker travel?
I can post some pics tomorrow.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the comments. As these are early, still plenty of time to make changes.

I cut two sets of files when I made these. One set to hold the Earthquake, the other to hold a set of my door speakers. On the door speakers, I added a countersunk hole so the adapter sits farther forward against the grill. I didnt include this on the EQ version, as I was cutting that groove on the back, and didnt want to make a jig to flip them over. What I will do in the future, is enlarge those four holes so the adapter sits all the way down.

On the set you have, you can replicate the revision by drilling a larger hole, using the original as pilots holes.

I will also put a foam gasket on the production version to help hold the grill and provide a good seal.

I can also order hardware if you guys have any feedback on what length you think should be included.

Thanks
Hans

Excellent Han's, that's an easy mod to drill the holes out so the four posts sit further in and secure the grills. Just didn't want to make any adjustments w/o you're input as I was un certain of the clearance needed.

Thank you, I can't wait to hear them

Just finished installing my new head unit and amp. The new b piller speakers sound good. Added plenty of bottom end. I tested them out with a little Pittbull. They handled it well. No distortion from the speakers, although I do get some rattle in the drivers side b piller. I'll have to sort that later. I'm very pleased with the sound and install. Now I just need to save up to do a set of door speakers from Hans.

I was able to get the right side installed, here is a few pic's including the one of the Grill to adapter gap that Han's is going to resolve, as Han's suggested.

I drilled out the prototypes to sit flush on the grills and added a bead of Hot Glue to the grills.

I really like the way they look and sound w/ the 87 watt booster amp I'm installing in the stock amp space. I'm running all new 16gauge wire to the amp and that is the toughest part of this job, if I were to use the stock wiring this would be a breeze.

I used the factory "short" speaker screws to mount the new speakers to the adapters and #5 5/8" screws to mount the Adapters to the grill surrounds.
The stock screws mount the assembly to the "B" pillers.

Art, what amp/power are you using to power the subs, please?

Thank you,

Dave

Dave I'm using the Lanzar Mini Max model MNX460. It's a 4 channel amp. I'm powering my fronts on channels 1 and 2 and the b pillers as subs on 3 and 4.
Here are some pics of the amp and my new head unit. I still need to tidy up my wiring.
