I put the britax with the base in the front seat in my '88. There was no way I could see putting it in the back and still have a passenger behind but I didn't try. Since there are no airbags I didn't see a problem with this, and since it is a very occasional thing for me. It was very tight and secure.

No self-respecting law officer is going to say you are endangering your baby, and certainly no judge or CPS person.

Fwiw, I found it much harder to put he Britax in the front than the rear. Just clearing the door, windshield, etc is much easier for the back seat than the front.

You may also want to check your state laws. Here in Colorado it is illegal to put an infant in the front seat, period! There is no provision in the law for airbag-less cars, single cab pickups, etc.
