It has always looked to me like it should be covered and on a modern car it likely would be. When it was new I am sure it was better but now that the hardware is getting older the best solution seems to cover it. It would be a lot easier than re-coating all the bits to make them look new again. If Jerry or someone thinks its worth making something I volunteer to be one of the first test mules.

Yes, heat would need to be considered. It think the fuel rail covers would get the same heat so it would need to be comparable plastic to them. At least I believe they are plastic.
