Both High beams not working

both high beams on my 1987 are not working
I have checked both 7.5amp fuses and they are fine
both bulbs look fine as well (I know it can sometimes be hard to tell if the filament is damaged, but I find it unlikely that they are both gone)
I've read that the wiring may be damaged due to the movement of the lights...also find it unlikely that both sides are damaged, but stranger things have happened....
Any advice? Is there a quick way to check if it is the relay?
thanks
John

My first pick would be the relay.
I would test the following:
Check to see if there is power at the socket the plugs into the bulb.
Check to see if there is a 'click' of relay within the relay unit. (may be heard or felt).
Do the aux main lights still work (either when headlight switch forward for main beam of when pulled rearward for flash?)

dont swap the relay unless you know that the parts are the same as there are different relays and you may let the smoke out of one of them.
Before you go off try this
put the headlights on then pull the stalk see if you can flash the hi beams and if they come on,
if not then you probably have a bad switch, OR bulb.
if they dont flash.
Remove the bulb connector and test for continuity for both filaments do both bulbs if you have continuity then .
Remove the relay and open the top inspect the 4 internal relays and clean the contacts you will be looking for a broken wire on one of the coils or a broken solder joint on the pins

when I put the headlights on, and pull the highbeam stalk, the main headlights totally shut off, but the lower fog lights work properly (one set shut off, while the other set turn on....can't remember if it was inboard or outboard...)

While the bulbs may look fine, I'd go get a new one and test it. Had a few over the years that the bulbs were just burnt out, yes both of them. It's possible that one went out and ya just didn't notice until neither of them were working.

Problem solved....
Didn't think it was at all likely, but turns out both HiBeam filaments were burnt out. Replaced both bulbs and everything works
thanks all
