Removing window tint, am I removing factory tint?
Hi I'm removing some barely smoke colored film from the inside of my 82 928 windows.
It's 2 distinct layers of film. As it was done very well and the fact that its 2 layers has me wondering, is this the factory tint? I can't imagine Porsche would use plastic film though.
Also as far as polishing the glass I tried that McGuires glass polish and I'm totally blown away with the difference. This car sat for a long time so may not have as much pitting but it is such a difference. Worth a try if anyone wants to restore the original glass luster.

Maybe you've got discoloured/sun aged Sekuriflex, which was a factory applied film, and the two layers you're seeing are the Sekuriflex film and the extra sacrificial layer where labels are to be applied.

I just removed mine. Its been on for 13+yrs. What i think you have left behind is the glue While it will be clear in appearance it will have an almost rubber, tacky like feel to it when you drag a finger nail across it. It feels very much like the inside of the front windshield that has sekurflex on it. It has to be removed also. Luckily much of mine came of with the tint layer.
I used fresh razor blades and soapy water and basically scraped it off.
Thankfully the rear hatch with the defroster wires was an area it all came of with the tint.

Yep it's side windows and hatch that have the tint. You know one thing I noticed on this car and on a BMW I had is that is these aftermarket tints do seem to save the leather in the long term. I would expect the leather to be totally shot for being this old but it's pretty soft and in good shape compared to what I've seen on other cars that old.
I think most people don't maintain the leather as they are supposed to and the tints do seem to reduce the damage/loss of moisture/oils in those cases. Seems like the darker tints are better in terms of UV/heat protection. So even though that old tint on a car you buy can look nasty, it may be a big benefit for leather interiors. I don't like the old aftermarket tint look (bluish) though so it's got to go. The leather gets conditioner on a regular basis now plus the car is garaged so that should keep it from drying out.
I've been using heat to peel off the films and razor blade/windex for the glue. A bit slow going but it works well. I'll check out the links above also to see if there may be a faster way.
