clear window film on inside of windshield.... heard of it?
apparently some of the euros did not have tempered window glass. I have a film on the inside of my windshield. similar to tint, but clear. It has a log on the bottom of it that says. "safevue laminated" on it. I am wanting to peel it off because it has yellowed with age. The alternative could be eating a large shard of glass in an accident though. am i correct in that assumption?

We just experienced trying to remove an inspection sticker from an 84 euro with this laminate on the inside.
You can't use a metal razor blade or you will scratch it off.
Even with a plastic blade it is difficult.

I am half tempted to just park the car under one of my tall trees that have large acorns on them and call my insurance company after a squirrel destroys it. it is super weird that there would be a car in 1984 that didnt have a tempered windshield. especially a porsche.... bizarre.

Factory for euros of that vintage was sekuriflex, which would be glass/plastic/glass/plastic, iirc. So really additional protection than the 3 layer us spec glass.

the Securiflex glass with inner plastic liner was developed by Saint-Gobain Inc. a French company. Tested briefly by Porsche and others, some 200,000 fitted to GM cars in the 1980s. Discountinued due to high replacement costs and the problem of scratching....
Also windshields are NOT TEMPERED but .....laminated because when they were tempered a rock hit would cause them to break into a million pieces "cubing" blocking ALL forward vision unless it fell into your lap ...So " The windshield glass in your car is made of laminated glass, which is designed to offer highest levels of safety in the event of a crash. The laminated glass is made up of two pieces of glass, with a thin layer of vinyl between them. The three pieces are laminated together by applying heat and pressure in a special oven called an autoclave. When a small object strikes a piece of safety glass, typically only the outer layer of the windshield that is struck breaks.
However, in severe impact situations, the glass “shatters” but usually does not fly apart because the broken pieces of glass generally adhere to the vinyl inner lining.
The side and rear windows are made of tempered glass, which is produced by heating the glass to more than 1,100°F and then rapidly cooling it. This “tempering” process makes the glass many times stronger than un-tempered glass of the same thickness...."
If you have ever broken a side or rear window you see how differently it reacts plus explains why windshields are rather fragile.....they are NOT tempered..

ok cool. thanks guys. So let me ask this then... If I peel off all of that inner plastic film, and my head or something else hits that windshield, will it react like a normal windshield? The film has aged and makes it very hard to see clearly out of it. It needs to go. I am fine with leaving that glass in the car if it is safe. Otherwise, it will be a comprehensive claim.

Almost, the euro's windshield like so many things is unique and the best available at the time. There are actually 5 layers for perfect function the 5th being a surface that was made for stickers and the like.
BUT since hardly anyone reads and knew what they were doing they have all been scratched and ruined beyond hope with gouges ........ bottom line, get a new windshield
Pics from the Euro booklet of all the new feature for 85;

wow...cool. Advice on the best way to get that stuff off? I was able to peel one of the 4 strips off easily. I do not anticipate the others being so cooperative. Maybe I should bring it to a tint place and let them do it.

Correct tempered glass which is fine until it is NOT then it turns into "rock salt" , which is why you only see cracks and stars on the windshield not side glass of any car built since 1966. The side rear glass just explodes when overstressed.
