Went to take my son to his mothers and hit something in the road. It was extremely loud so I stop and backed up. Well when I looked in front of me I see an oil slick about a foot wide. My heart sunk... I knew then that it was fatal. Turns out that I hit a 2 foot piece of 1/4 " steel (leaf spring) in the road. It kicked up and either went through the block or the oil pan. Once I get it up in the air I will be able to tell more.

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully insurance will get you another 928.

Ouch, that's a bummer! Hopefully you got it turned off relatively quickly? +1 on the hope that it's just a cracked oil pan- At the very least it's worth investigating, and a used pan is $200. If the motor still turns easily I'd bet that insurance would pay to have a new (used) pan installed?

If it's save-able, I have a spare silicone OPG gasket that I'll donate to the cause.

Thanks Rob, I will keep that in mind. It's just a real shame. I was going to have it painted this month. Now it's on hold until I find out what damage was done. Plus my son may have learned some new words to tell the ex about.

Block is pretty protected. My guess is oil pan. Minor problem.

Hopefully it's just the pan and no other issues.
By the look of your avatar photo it looks like you are thoughtful enough to take care of matters...
You'll have it back on the road when you take care of matters one more time.

PO ran over something in the Schwartz car that pulled the A/C compressor off the side of the block. Problem was that it took part of the block with it. Just above the oil pan but below the water jackets et al. I pulled the engine, and went to my local drag car builder and had him fabricate a piece to fill the hole and TIG/MIG/Heliarc it back together. Put it all back together and it was all good.

Now I just gotta pull that engine again for head gaskets.

Had a similar occurance with our '90 944 cabriolet. A trucker had forgotten to tie down his hangers and they were scattered along the road. With cars coming toward and a pickup on the side of the road, there was no place to go but straight. The hook part of the tie down tore through the belly pan (much like the 928 s4's) and took out the oil pan (about an 8" hole) Smoke and oil everywhere. The trucker had stopped and got information from him. He did not want to go through insurance due to his negligence, so I told him I would get prices and he pay for parts. Cost was around $1700 for pan, bearings and other things torn up. He balked at price and I told him to find a Porsche mechanic and get his own estimate. He discovered this was not a chevy or ford (estimate was over $8500) He brought a check the next day.

Not wanting to hijack thread, but show that something catastrophic can be fixed. If pan is gone look to change main bearings and pickup for oil. Good luck with this and hopefully nothing too terrible will be found. Keep us posted.

Sorry to hear........Similar thing, one big *** rock, no where to go, just enough time to offset the hit from the middle of the car. Many bangs, whummp, crash, bamf, clunk. Looked in rear view mirror saw a huge rock up in the air coming down just missing the WRX following me too close. No stream of oil behind me, hmmm, cool. Limped home. WRX pulled off the road after edging even closer to me. What they hay.....

Up on a lift counted 9 strikes, one small, small gouge in oil pan, bent a bracket and hit 7 other non critical areas that caused no grief. Porsche Miracle...

Sorry to hear about this. But more importantly, it sounds like you and your son are unharmed.

If it makes you feel better, your shark is not the only victim of things on the road. I once ran over a small rock that smashed-up the floor behind my seat. Others have seen pretty serious damage from metal pieces as you did.

Hopefully you can fix the engine or get a used one to replace it with.

Looks like you have a 4.7l Ljet motor. Prolly pick up a good low miles long block for $500 or less if you look. So, worst case you are just looking at the motor swap. That is a weekend with a (knowlegable) buddy, or about $1000 at a reasonable shop. The expensive thing would be the 'while your in there's that will crop up, but it looks like you are well ahead of the curve on that. But I suspect you will just need a pan. Good time to do the gasket.

Same happened to me but the gas tank was pierced...
