Nice write up...just finished reading from the start. Engine looks great.
I am in the middle of doing the WP/TB job on the '87 5-speed I recently acquired. I am also going with the PKensioner. This is my first 928 WP/TB (I am a Saab tech by trade).
When you say PKensioner users can go with an "earlier" water pump, what year(s) does that pump originally fit? What is the part number?
I like to use a Permatex product called "Hi-Tack" on my water pump gaskets. It sprays on (it's red) and holds gaskets where you want them for installation, and seals very nicely with quality gaskets.

Just a small update on how this car runs..
After advancing the timing 2 degrees, new plugs and some ignition component cleaning, this car breaks tires loose completely on first gear take offs. I now have very long tire tracks leading up to my house from the stop sign down the street about 100 yards.
