I've seen the compare contrast on wiki
What I need/learning about is the little things that WE know about.
For example: early 944 is lighter than the later. Later has a spring tensioner. Turbos have different bits every year they are made. (crossover pipes, etc). Mid 87' 951's had a change that made it easier to replace a clutch.
Those types of things.
I've heard horror stories from mechanics that the 928 is a demon. Everyone says every Porsche is a demon. It's mostly bs. Just like to confirm that kill is all. Do Porsches have demon qualities? Sure. (the clutchs are pain to change). Most everything else is straightforward and great build quality.
Keep the good stuff coming!
Still waiting to get that vin# from that guy to see if it's a 86.5

Clutch removal on the 928 is fiddly (and somewhat physically challenging), but technically easy. Remove lower bell housing cover and it's all right there.
Dual disk clutch through 86 (will drag and wear synchros if not adjusted properly); single disk 87 up.
Porsche designed synchros through 84, Borg Warner synchros 85 up. Some consider the early synchros to be weak (think 911 915 gearbox vs. G50).

Yes, I've heard that the 928 clutch is pretty easy to replace. Remember it's a transaxle, which is in the back. No need to drop the transmission to do the clutch.
911 mechanics say 928's are hard to work on. Not 928 mechanics. If your mechanic says a 928 is hard to work on, he's admitting he doesn't know 928s.

If you're talking about the one on CL, it's an early '86. Lighter weight than a '86.5.
One nice thing about that car, though, the rub strips aren't factory. No holes if you peel them off. (Note the strips on the fenders are too short.)
Missing the $350 front spoiler. $4500 is too high for the miles (180K). It would sell better south of $3500 these days.
Heck, I'd sell my '86.5 auto (150K) for $4500.

The problem/advantage of the 928 is that there are so many models and engines. Really something for a lot of people's interests. That's why there are so many divergent opinions. And often it's "get a car like mine" which really isn't helpful unless you are like them.
So what are you like? DIY or shop? Project or concours? Sports car or luxury? Manual or automatic? African or European?
