So what are you like? DIY or shop? Project or concours? Sports car or luxury? Manual or automatic? African or European?

Great way to put it.

I'm a "driver". "Our cars are meant to be driven, not polished..." I take that quote to heart. Where I'm at is past the honeymoon phase of Porsche. I'm sick of the worry. I just want to drive. So, next Porsche, be it a 928 or a 951 (s), it's getting the matte black wrap, and be done with it.

I: DIY, sports car, I don't mind the Automatic (mine is already an auto). I have zero problems keeping up, or better...pulling over and waiting for the others to catch up

on another forum, a member wrote this about the 928:
price of a tune up will exceed the purchase price.
Hell any repair will exceed the purchase price.

1981 version comes with 4.7 L engine that has to come out of the car to service the cam seals etc.
12 hours labor just to R/R engine

The mechanic I spoke with about the 928 is a shop in Portland. Told me; "It's a supercar, with supercar prices". Son owns a 928 race car. Good people.

anything else guys?

timing chain pads? etc. etc.

Porken...we should chat soon. It helps me to see things. helps me more to have someone with knowledge point and say; "there and there, that and that". lol!

Not true for 84 and older (not sure about 85/86?) Pulling the heads and everything on top of them can be done with engine in the car. Although I'm not saying if I had to do it again, I wouldn't pull the engine--just saying it can be done. Seemed like the WP/TB job was much faster on my 84 compared to the GTS too. Less crap in the way I guess.

As for supercar parts prices, I'd recommend you poke around one of the vendor websites and see what you think. I.e., 928s R Us, 928 International, 928 Specialists, Pelican, etc. There are big differences through the years--e.g, front rotors on a GTS are a lot more, transmission mounts on OBs are much less, etc.

You should have plenty to think about now! If not then ask a question about the right oil to use.....no really...don't!

I started with a 16v and I love it, a little lighter very good torque and decent power once you get it into shape, plus, I like the rubber spoiler look. Less complicate, non-interference and the last of it's breed as of 83. The interior is different between early and late models too. So just go out and check out a few different years in person, or better yet, go to an event near you and check some that have already been worked on and see what the result is in person!

Enjoy your purchase.....just jump in the pool.
