Default Can someone please help, Strange Problem

I just purchased an 1984 euro 928 with a strange problem. When I start the car I get a very loud squeaking sound coming from what seems like the air cleaner area at the base of the engine where the mass air would be. While this loud squeaking is going on, the car is misfiring and running poorly. After a minute or so as the car warms up the squeaking will stop, the misfire is gone, and the car is idleing smooth, but every red warning light on the dash is lit. This includes the question mark light, the light that goes on when you're running low on fuel, etc. If I shut the car off and restart it, the squeak will be back along with the misfire for 15 seconds or so then the same thing will happen. The squeak will go away and the car will run nice and smooth. Please note neither the tach nor vacuum gauge works and the voltage gauge shows only 11 volts when started, but goes higher when I rev it. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure it's not a loose alternator belt?

It's an automatic, it could be the alternator because after putting the front lights on and checking the electronics out while it was running I then reved the motor while that squeak was happening. The squeak increased in volume and then all of a sudden like a switch just stopeed. The red lights appearded including whatever is being said in German. And then the car stopped running. Not it doesn't have enought power to crack over. Could a short in the Alternator cause the car to miss fire? Then when the Alternator cuts out ( No more squeak) the cars warning lights and every other dash light comes on.... but the car rights so damn smooth with all the red lights on? Thats what throwing me off. The squeak sure as hell sounds like its coming from the back of the motor.

Like me add the following, After letting it sit for 10 minutes it started right up, squeak and all, rev it up the squeak and missfire stop and it runs smooth, 30 years in the hobby and I've never seen this

Loosen the alternator belt, check how easily/quietly the alternator turns. Could be its got a bearing going out, and its stiff to turn.

Take a spray bottle of water and while the car is squeaking, spray the belt. If squeak stops then its the belt.

well you can check the hot post for the charge thats being supplied by the alternator,
if all of the warning lights are on then the alternator isnt charging
You would also be wise to check the crank end play and the flex plate.
Also check the rear drive shaft pinch bolt at the transaxle 66 ft/lbs for both pinch bolts

Good lord I got a break, I removed the belt and the squeak is gone, A rebuilt Alternator should fix the problem. P.S, MrMerlin that is the nicest color I've even seen on a 928,

Why thank you Xvett.

Still suggest to check the crank end play on your car
