As noted, 225/50/16 will work fine.

You do get a bit more rubber on the road with the wider wheel so not all is lost.

Mine are 7.5 fronts and 9 rears which I suspect the OP has the same as its the 91 wheels? So a 225x50 I doubt it would fit on a 9 inch rim???

Not going to willingly part with ClubSport rims on my '89 928GT. And ZRi, RE-11, R1R are gone, gone and gone. Sooo, called Tire Rack for a recommendation a couple days ago. Suggestion is BF Goodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2, which I see is #1 (of 28 tested) Ultra High Perf. Summer tire. 225/50-16 F and 255/50-16 rear. By my calc, looks to be 0.7" taller (245 x 0.45 = 110.25, while 255 x 0.50 = 127.5. Diff is 17.25mm, or 17.25/25.4 = 0.679" ANYWAY, I wonder about 5 mm (each side) in rear rubbing the "cringed" inside of fender. Any opinion/advice/experience?? Thanks.

I got some 245/50 16 for my 91 GT. If I did it again I would go with the 255/50 16

The 255/50-16 has a diameter variance of 5.5% vs the 245/45-16.
Even the 245/50-16 as 3.91%
The maximum recommended is 3%.

Forgot: OE ClubSport rims are 8" front and 9" rear on '89 928GT. Also, threadwear rating on ZRi is 320, 340 on the BFG g-Force Sport COMP-2. EHT

Is "maximum recommended" based on how secure tire holds to rim? Or speedo variance? Do you calculate that or is it variable listed in tire data??

Who's recommendation? Based on what?

Just curious where you got this information.

The manufacturers determine it. Check out ww.tirerack.com and looks at tires by brand/model. There'll be a table of every size and the specs.

If it is really dangerous to drive with a 3% diameter difference, half the 928's out there should be taken off the road. Now! Think of the children.....</sarcasm>

Is this size really hard to find?

Tirerack offers nine different models: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...50&diameter=16

I suppose it's a bit far to go but you could have them delivered to Wellesley Island Building Supply via KINEK.

As an alternative, try http://www.1010tires.com

OK, let me try again: OE on '89 928 GT (ClubSport) is 225/50-16 F and 245/45-16 R. 245/45-16 tires are nearly "unobtainable." Tire Rack recommended 255/50-16. NOTE: 245/50-16 max rim width is 8.5" (9" OE ClubSport rrear rims). Bertrand mentioned "diameter variance" between 245/45-16 to 255/50-16 as 5.5%. (I get 5.7 using Toyo Proxes RA1 245/45-16 because I could NOT find specs for Fuzion ZRi), but close enough for government work. I am surprised Tire Rack would recommend anything that exceeds "manufacturers' recommendation, but I will pursue this further. I DID find set of 225/50-16ZR and 245/45-16ZR tires with W speed rating. They have UTQR treadwear rating of 420/280 (not sure if that is front/rear, or what). These are Primewell PZ900 tires. Mostly positive ratings from users and UNANIMOUS "best for the (cheep) price." In spite of the 40,000 mile wear guarantee, most are getting 15,000 to 30,000 miles.

I can't believe they'd recommend that either.

Check out the tire specs for tires that sound good. Here's a high-end tire with lots of options:

Michelin Pilot A/S Plus tire specs and click the "specs" tab.

You can see the rim width the manufacturer suggests. For the 225/50/16 it will go on 6" through 8" rims so you can put them all around. You could go with a 245/50/16 in the rear. That's be ((836-810)/836) or 3.1% too tall. That'll raise the back 0.4" because the car is raised by the radius which is half the diameter.

When in doubt, just get the 225 size. Sure, you lose 20mm of tread width in the rear but you get the right size and your choices go from a few to a huge selection. Tire rack list 60 tires models in that size.

Much greater and cheaper choices than 17s.

Don't believe those old wive's tales of bent 18" wheels - never happens.
Uhhhhmmmmm... tell that to my passenger side front 3-piece rim... Yes, they do get bent... unfortunately
