Default I'm curious about these 928 16x8 Club Sport wheels...

Decided I'd pop over here and pick your guys' brains on the 16x8 club sport wheels:

The 951S came with CS wheels in 16x7 fronts and 16x9 rears. I currently have this setup on my car.

I've been thinking about trying to hunt down a pair of 16x8 wheels to run up front but I'm not sure if there are different offsets floating around due to model and year etc. Are these things super rare? From my experience people always like to try and sell the smaller wheels to try and snag the larger rear wheels. Are the 16x8's at all 4 corners, or do the 928's have x9's in the rear as well?

I suppose if anyone has a pair laying around let me know.

I'm mostly wondering if this is even a worth while endeavor.

Thanks all.

For 928 fitment they were 8 x 16 ET 60 front, 9 x 16 ET 60 rear. Only about 100 sets of the 8" Clubsports were sold in 1989 in the U.S., plus some sets from dealers, but not too many, they were hideously expensive. Porsche still has new ones in stock:

Rob, yeah I figured that was the case. I checked that thread out just before I posted this thread. Wasn't sure if there were different ones or what.

Well looks like I'll be sticking with what I've got or trying to snag a set of x9's from another 951S.

I was just checking out your 928GT add on the 'bay. Nice ride! Maybe, just maybe, I'll add a shark to my garage one of these days.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

They show up on Porsche forums and ebay ocassionally. I saw a full set of 8's and 9's recently for $800.

I bought a single used 8" CS at DEVEK long ago. The offset was stamped as 52.3. Always presumed it was a 944T wheel.

Here is a thought. It appears to me that the club sport wheels are actyally made out of the man hole cover wheels, but with the slots cut out more so as to be more of a triangle rather than the elongated slot. Look on the back side of one and you will see a raised hump that actually describes the larger cutout.

Then, I think the rears of the manholes are 8 inch be 16 inch. The only thing I can't tell from the outside is what the offset is with the 8 inch rears. If it is correct for use on the front of your car, you can make your own club sports. At least that is what it seems to me.

I'm pretty sure the cut-out method has been done before.

Also, there were black stickers floating around that you could buy and simply apply to the man-hole covers to make them appear to be CS wheels.

No, Club Sports are not manhole covers. They are forged. If memory serves, they are about 15 pounds each.

The flat S wheels are forged as well.....and Devek years ago used to have them machined to look like CS wheels.

Yep I actually saw a thread today about some guy who thought he was buying CS wheels that were actually manholes with the stickers (made my inner porschephile laugh). I noticed when I first got my CS wheels that they were just a manhole with a lot more cut out. the little grooves that follow the transition from spoke to rim are even the same. Thats a thought, all though I'm a bit of an OCD maniac when it comes to things being not quite right, and with a cut job as such it may end up not quite right. If i'm ever desperate for that extra bit of rim I'll know what to do! What I'm hoping is that I'll find some poor sap on craigslist that doesn't know what they really have and snag 'em.

I suppose for now the 7's will have to do.

Thanks again for all the input!

I am sure this has been tried before, but how about putting two 9" rear wheels on the front? With ET60 and moderate tire width it may be better than the 7" 951 wheels?

Ian,

It has, and they fit well. Jay Kempf has run that setup 16*9 Club Sports for 6 or 7 years now. The problem is that 245/45 16 performance tires are getting harder to find. With a 9" wide rim at all four corners you could run the same tire front and rear. Kumho used to offer a 265/40 16 in thier XS line that was the same diameter as a 245/45 16 but I think it is discontinued.

Ian, yep lots of track guys run the 9's all round for their rain set up etc... The main reason I was looking for x8 rims was because I have fairly new tires. I'm running 255/50's on the back (sounds super big, actually looks great and the sidewall holds up) and 225/50's in front on the 7's. I could get the 225's on a 9inch rim but it'd be quite a stretch. I don't really like stretch. x8's would be perfect!!

I may still do it with x9 rims, though. We'll see.

86_5Tiburon, those are about as far away from me as you could possibly get! Haha! I like the thought though!
