Remember the first 928 you laid your eyes on?
Guys....I'd be curious to hear about your experience the VERY FIRST time you saw a 928 in person. I'm posting this because It was only last year that I ever saw one up close and the experience was incredible. Really left me kind of dazed. It was at a local car show in Waupaca Wisconsin which featured mostly american steel. There it was...my first 928 up close. I just couldn't stop looking at it. That was amazing considering all the great cars at the show. After meeting the owner (a super nice guy) and looking at the car 3 different times I was HOOKED. Left the show, stopped at McDonald's for lunch and wasn't long til until I was diligently searching EBAY on my IPAD for my own 928. So tell me about your experience and add some pics if you like. I'm trying to add a photo of mine.

I must have been around 10 years old when my Dad's insurance agent pulled up in his brand new black 928. I remember it was dark outside and I was staring at that thing like it was a UFO. I was already into cars back then - my dad drove Alfas, my aunt Datsun Z's and my uncle Mercedes. All these cars stuck with me and still do. But back to the 928 - I knew already then that one day I'll own a 928...and as it so often goes, you just can't have only one :P

It was long ago in the high school timeframe of 1978-1982.
I had two posters in my room, one was the Alpine "Body by Lamborghini, High fidelity by Alpine" and the other was of a white 928 with black and white Pascha interior. I remember the poster had several views (front, side, and interior). I still have the Lambo poster (it's on the wall in my garage, but I lost the 928 poster along the way.
I was already subscribing to Car and Driver, Road and Track, and Motor Trend at the time and also made the pilgrimage to the NY Auto Show every year. The 928 was on my list of dream cars long before Risky Business came along.....

WAYYYYY back in 1992 We were shopping for a replacement car for the one we just wrecked. Wife wanted a 65 Mustang for no apparent good reason. After weeks of searching and driving them all with disappointment. I suggested we look at the Euro car trader (yea paper weekly paper). Anyway there was one more car to look at that day. # 347 Platinum sliver 5 speed. It was in a garage under a cover. The Owner interviewed us before he started it. The car was gorgeous and that V-8 rumble was OMG cool. Her requirement was pop up lights and cool sound OK watch this as the lights pivoted out of the fenders. SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

IIRC it was +/- 1980 at Deerhurst Resort in Central Ontario.......Mid-Winter.....Black on Black..and the guy driving it and his lady friend were in fur coats.....live shot from a magazine....
Few years later, around '85 a friend had a great year and bought one....that's when I made the mistake of driving it....been hooked since.

Fast forward a couple decades or so, and the one I have now came up in a discussion over garage toys while on a construction site in the Philippines. I bought it sight-unseen from the construction manager, after finding a couple rather scruffy OB's parked out on the street to get a feel for the kind of project I was getting into. The one I actually bought was just about perfect though, 8 years old with 22k on it. It's been a project as they all are, but way different from what I thought I was getting into when I sent a check blindly in a DHL envelope. Different in a very good way.

Three Wheelin'
Actually there were TWO (if you dont mind). The first was in 79 or so... My Dad was a salesman at a Porsche Audi dealer in Radcliff, KY, just outside Fort Knox... High ranking Officers and Drs were pretty much the clientele and joy rides were not common. You didnt see too many salesmen driving 928 Demos on the road but my Dad drove new model test trials outside Columbus, OH, and drove with the likes of Mark Donahue. Needless to say, the old man could DRIVE! So I wasnt tooo surprised one day when I was at home and heard Dad pull into the driveway with a Vvvrrrooooommmm!!! I was thinking "What the hell is that?... maybe Dad brought home a suped-up 911 or that 914/6 with the custom exhaust... Initially, looking out the window I thought it was a 924, but no... this was WAY cooler and sounded like no Porsche I'd ever heard. My brothers and I all lined up with questions and to go for rides (there are NINE of us so it took a while). It was like riding in a spaceship on rails - the car on the twisty KY roads threw us around in the seats like rag dolls... we LOVED it! In the mid 80s I was home on military leave and stopped in to see Dad at the dealership. Two cars were front & center in the showroom - a red 911 Turbo and a special order 928S. I checked the stickers and the 928S was LOADED with a price tag in excess of $60K... I said "this costs $60 THOUSAND dollars... I could buy a house!!" in a pretty loud voice. My Dad said without missing a beat and very matter-of-factly "true but then you wouldnt own a Porsche 928..." If you had the $$ you would have agreed and bought the damn car on the spot! I was in love from that day forward, but couldnt AFFORD my 928S for another 25 years! Happy 50th Birthday!!!

I knew about the cars as a kid of course, because I read all the magazine articles. I was however a 911 guy as that was what a REAL Porsche was afterall... I never had even seen a 928 at that point in time. In fact I had driven 944's and 911's (cab and coupe) before I ever even laid eyes on a real live in the flesh 928.
It was late '91 or early '92 and I was calling on a doctor, in of all places, Goldthwaite, TX (the middle of nowhere almost and certainly a VERY LONG WAY from anyone who could work on that car!) and out side the clinic in the "driveway" was this low, wide, flat, black spaceship of a car... I knew what it was but MAN DID IT LOOK GOOD! I went in the clinic and instead of talking about my drugs we talked about his new car! It was an '88 S4 5spd...black/black and just gorgeous. I think it had like 17k miles on it and he told me it was THE CAR! He told me all about and then said, he is also selling a white '87 auto...you should think about it! The white one had about 30k miles on it...I was not in a place to buy it at the time though...as much as I wanted to!
Well, I did think about it and 4 years later I bought my own '88 S4! Then another and another and another and the next thing you know I have nearly a dozen of these beautiful wonderful beasts! They have introduced me to some of my BEST FRIENDS and BEST EXPERIENCES! I can't say enough about being seduced by these wonderful cars!

I first saw the car in all the magazines and fell in love with the look immediatly. It was 1980 and I was running maintenance for a major airline. On the day of my sighting I was on the curb at the terminal talking to a Maintenance man about a bag belt break down. I'm wearing a three piece suit facing away from curb and I hear this deep rumbling idle noise. Knowing immediatly that this was something special I turned around to see a brown 928 idling by. Hoping the guy was picking someone up I started running after the car. I had to get a closer look and talk to the owner! I ran almost the entire length of the terminal only to see him pull away. But that was all I needed, I knew I was going to own one someday. Took me another 25 years but now I'm my second.

My first-born was born in August of 1979. My wife at the time worked for the same major airline as Jim M. above and she needed some getaway time from our newly born daughter so we traveled on a weekend trip to San Fran and then on to Napa Valley. We stayed in the Napa motor lodge, I think it was called. As we were going to bed that evening, I heard a rumble outside the door and saw the headlights of late arriving guests. I remember thinking that they were driving some kind of hotrod.
In the morning, I went outside to find a white '79 OB in the parking lot. Good god! The lines of that car were so smooth and rounded. The car was so sleek it looked alien to the world of "K" cars and the like that we knew at that time.
Thankfully, the owner came out to find me oogling his new car. He had his wife, son, and daughter with him and had just traded a Datsun 240Z for this car. The 240Z was "THE" hot car in those days and nobody in their right mind would have traded a 240Z!! As I talked to him, I asked him how it drove in comparison to the 240Z. Honest to God, he said(exact words), "There is no comparison."
I knew at that instant, that someday, I would own a 928.

Since I was a baby all through my teen years I always woke up to the loud exhaust sound from my Dads 928. It has aftermarket Borla exhaust and that well known resonance. My bedroom was right over the garage so when he fired it up my eyes would snap open.

I bought the first one I saw "in person", 2 years ago. I had to have it.
My friend who new all about the Porsche 928 had first choice of 2 for sale. He wanted the 85 5 speed, I got the 81 5 speed LSD. Turned out to be a very rewarding experience.
