Fall of 1985 as a freshman at Embry Riddle Avaition Univ. in AZ. A Red on Tan 85/86...it was the sound that turned my head, the burble as it came down the crest of a hill to the student lot....then the looks sold me. Guards red..phone dials..pop up lights blaring..the tail lights. It was parked in the student lot...."owned" by a Middle Eastern kid. I remember walking by it all the time, looking at it thinking....that lucky Ba$tard.

Wanted one ever since...and will have a 86 someday.

Summer 1979 on the New York State Thruway. Heading north in my 71 Firebird with my older sister in the death seat. A silver OB just slid alongside on my left and just paced him with my mouth hanging open for about 5 miles. I had seen the car in the various gearhead rags but that was nothing compared to seeing one in the wild. I thought then that the shape was just about perfect and still think so today.

Summer 1986....as a sophmore in highschool my parents had just divorced and my mom moved us from the city of Chicago to this crazy town north called Highland Park IL....down the street was a Porsche dealed the actual dealer that was in the Risky Business movie....I had to walk by the dealership everyday to go to school....I think every day I knew which ones were new and which ones were sold... It was love at 1st sight
they also had the Audi brand the GTcoupe was a beauty as well...

Eplebnista (I love that episode BTW) WHY does the 928 look so different "in the wild" than in photos? I know what you are saying because I saw many photos over the years of 928 cars and they just never really grabbed me UNTIL I saw my first car up-close last year. Where I live there just weren't any 928's around to look at.

It wasn't in person..but an ad that caught my attention. This was back in 79 (just moved to Ft. Knox with my folks) and I was seriously into cars. My mom was into interior decorating etc...and got this magazine called Architectural Digest. In the magazine I came across an ad showing the interior of a Porsche that I thought was just like a cockpit of a plane...and imagined what it would be like to drive a car where the dash wraps into the door to totally immerse you into the experience... I even posted in my senior high school paper (where you predict what you will be doing in 10 years)... I posted that I would be driving a 928 .

Didn't actually achieve that.. (close though) ..had a wager with one of my fellow grad students who also loved the 928 who would be the first to get one.. well...he beat me.. only because after grad school he went home to live with his folks while working and saving...

I did get my first one in 1998 (a black 5sp 84) shortly after moving to Seattle..found a for sale post on the old porsche list from some guy down in Anaheim selling one that was too good to part out.. (anyone know who?? LOL).. flew down and drove it back...and have owned one or more 928's ever since..

Hey Jbrob007...I don't recall the Porsche dealer in Radcliff..and lord knows I spent lots of time "cruising" around Radcliff.... Was it down by the VW dealer?... I was mostly into Chevy's at the time (dad had a Z-28 Camaro)...and hung around Sneed Chevrolet quite a bit.. they used to give me the license plates off the old trade ins from all the soldiers..so I have quite the diverse plate collection today .

I had a new 911 T in 71, and It was a great car mechanically, but the interior fell apart. I was soured on Porsches and traded it in on my 74 Pantera. Never thought about another Porsche till 09. I had some settlement money left over, and started looking for another collector car. There's to many old fart's with Vettes, and I didn't want another 911. Started my search on Ebay, and bought my first S4 without knowing anything about the car. Bought it on looks alone. Figured I'd buy cheap and flip it. I fell in love with it the first time I drove it. My first drive was to bring it back to Vegas, from Portland,Or. I lucked out and got a good one! I'd still have it if it haden't gotten rear-ended. I didn't know RL exisited, but found this place, and it's made owning a 928 one of the best experiences I ever had!

My wife never liked the Pantera, said:" it was to noisey, uncomfortable, money pit, scared to death of it!" She really loves the 928, and always wants to take road trips in it. When the 87 was totaled, she told me how much she enjoyed the car, and said I should buy another, as long as it isn't red. I found my black 89 in Arizona, and it's a great car also. There are no plans to sell it, prolly give it to my grandson someday.

Fall of 1977 when my dad brought his home. I was 6/7. (Don't remember the exact month)

Fell in love with the car. It was absolutely fascinating to ride in. Tons of little things that you would never find interesting today were super cool when the car was new!! Like the window switches, the little hidden wiper delay wheel under the dash. It was all sooooooo different than anything else on the road. Our car (not just my dads, I took my own level of ownership right away) was dark brown, all leather, 5spd sunroof delete car.

It was so fascinating to watch the way people behaved around the car back then.

We drove from Denver to Disney Land when was about 9 and the valet refused to drive it. Instead he let us park right up front and put those movie theater poles and velvet ropes around the car

I rode around in that car for 9 years before getting my first "legal" drive in it. (Then there is the whole story about me and a friend stealing it for a joy ride at age 12, cops, short chase, sliding it into the garage to hide it) I did eventually learn how to drive in it.

Dad put 109k miles on it in 9 years before trading it in.

One of my favorite things to do today with my Esspresso Braun Metallic S4 (with the same color combo interior as my dads 78) is to park it on the street outside a downtown coffee shop and watch the people walk by. Kids, little kids that have no idea what it is, stop and look at the shape, walk around it, and just stop in their tracks. It's fun to watch someone that has no preconceptions about what it is take notice and be fascinated with it. Just like I did when I was 7!

Of course the big kids in their 30-40-50s often stop to look at it too but that tis not nearly as interesting to me.


I always wonder what happened to that car. Would probably buy it for the right price. Unfortunately I have no remaining records of it. Think someone here in Colorado still has it.

The one I own is literally the first one I ever sat in, and I owned it before I even saw it in person, bought as a 'project' car on eBay. I had seen maybe a dozen of them in person before that in my whole life.

Tony, we were almost classmates at Embry-Riddle! I was accepted for fall of '86, only school I applied to. That was a pricey school back then. I ended up attending the school of hard-knocks instead. But I've got my 928 now!

Maybe 25 years ago, a sleazy bleached blonde was delivering **** tapes to a local video store in a
faded blue 928. She was using it for a daily driver. I had seen a skeleton illustration of the mechanics in a car mag and was impressed but the looks of her car made a serious impression. Years later I happened upon one locally and did not hesitate to snap it up. Love that car. If you haven't driven it for a while, the
sound when it explodes to life in my batcave moistens my tear ducts. -I think y'all know what i mean.
(BTW, Doug, I like you kept your 80 original, phone dials and all, looks like mine)

Whattayaknow... another Army Brat!! Did you dine & dash at Jerrys... a favorite pastime of the locals when not cruising McDonalds or over in E-Town Thats the same dealership... Kelly Vance VW, Porsche, Audi. The ONLY Porsche dealer south of Louisville because of the high ranking brass (lots of full birds) on Ft Knox and DRs at Ireland Army Hospital. Their bread & butter was VW / Audi, but the Porsches were SOOOO cool they sold quite a few each month. My Dad is Robbie Roberts - Retired E-8 / Car Salesman. He sold cars at Sneed for a while before finally retiring but Porsches were IT as far as he was concerned. The man could sell cars and drove them even better - I have an autographed photo (Indy 500 Win) from Mark Donahue to my Dad and all nine kids by name! Pretty cool piece of history with a personal touch... framed and hanging in my office. From what I understand Mark D was no slouch when it came to driving a Porsche

Don't remember Jerry's but cruised the main strip there...McDonalds was always the destination (or Merlins Castle..back in the day video games were cool ). I was there from 79 through 83. Rode my bicycle from Radcliff to E-town way too many times . Lived in the Van Vooris neighborhood. I remember walking through the VW dealership checking out the "new" Rabbits... and do recall seeing a 924.. but no 928s.. that would have been quite a site in Radcliff LOL...

My dad bought both his cars from Sneed (the Z28 in 79..and a Chevette in 83 (yea..Chevette haha)). When were you there?

it's funny i parked on the street in front of the home i'm renovating and a guy about 50 yrs old got out of a Prius walked toward me and asked what year it was. Then he said remember when these things came out?
