My view is that every old 928 takes more work than makes sense, so unless you have your heart into it, find somebody that does, and is willing to put a ridiculous amount of time and money into making it what they want. After sitting 20 years I would want the heads off before digging in deeper.

Cut your loses and move on. Plenty of other 928's that need love.

I'm a little surprised at the "cut your losses" perspective. What is there to be so afraid of? I cut my losses a long time ago. Should I let it sit in the basement another 20 years?

Sounds like a nice parts car to have around. That's a great aspect of the 928 hobby right now, parts cars are affordable to own.

True. I have an '85 that I bought for that purpose. The '86 here doesn't scare me any. Name a part for an S3 and I'll bet that I have two of each as extras.

Austin - you say you have no sentimental connection to the car - yet you sound/act like you do...

It's just a pile of parts. It will take a huge amount of work to be only a bit better than an ordinary '86 with a serious accident history... really that can't be a good outcome (no matter how nice you make it).

If you have no attachment - save the parts you think are useful, of the rest sell what you can and take the rest to the junkyard...

Alan, maybe I'm confused about what attachment means with regards to a car. I'm not married to her.

That said, I don't mind to devote some time to this car now (no strings attached). The truth is that I have gotten a little bored. My younger brother has shown interest in this car too, and I thought it would be great project for he & I to take on. My thought was to gift it to him as I don't need another white 928.

I welcome your comments; any and all of them. I don't take offense to any point of view, but that isn't a promise that I'll see it the same way. It's just a car.

It actually looks more like a pile of parts to me.

Really they key for me is at the end of the day it seems you will have something with close to a salvage title - you could start with something without that hanging over it and in a better starting condition - probably for the value of it in parts.

Given that I think the rational thing is to follow that plan - unless you are indeed attached to the idea of it (say as a mistress...)

If you can use this car and it's repair as a bonding experience between you and your brother then I say "Go for it".
It would be worth more in that way than parting it out.Imho

Salvage title is a big hit to the market value, but 15k miles is a big bump. If the damage is completely fixed I think you end up with a fairly big net premium value. Maybe a deciding point is how completely fixed you think the damage is? If you are satisfied with the repair, then fixing it the rest of the way and enjoying a low mileage car seems reasonable.

It might look overwhelming to you, but I've reduced cars to that point or beyond a time or two before. The paint & body aspect of this is a NON ISSUE.

The title is clear not that my brother and I care. I'm not going to forget that it came home looking like it was hit by CSX, as they all did. I know who fixed it.

That's the kind of logic that I have been using lately as I began giving this some thought. I don't look at the mileage as a big bonus on this particular car as it has just been sitting up BUT there is no doubt that it would be a super nice '86.5, if completed.

I don't care what it's worth then or now, or whatever. I've got a good idea of what it will cost to complete and I can live with the numbers. I just hope that it gets enjoyed.

Thank you for commenting.

Sounds to me like this is a done deal... I say GO FOR IT!!! You wont find a better opportunity to get some real time with your brother than wrenching on a car. Maybe your brother will want it as a daily driver... which is a double bonus!!
