OK folks My speedo and odo work for 3 days after my last attempt and then they fail again!!!
I am officially DONE trying to determine why my speedo needle only reads 20 mph - and the odometer do not work...
I have taken the pod apart twice to clean and inspect and replace the ODO gear.. I have inspected all connections in the rear of the car..
I recently found a solution to all of my issues! I plan to take photos and record how this process goes!
Check out the speedhut gauges..I am going to order this one... (once I take the pod apart again so I can figure if 3-3/8 or 4 inch would work best) From what I can tell through the clear plastic (before removal) today - it looks like 3-3/8 size will work...
The best thing is NO MORE speedo/odo problems! All this is GPS!
And I called Speedhut - they will even add my previous 123,000 milage to my gauge and it will come with a button on a wire that I can mount under the pod!
What are your thoughts? Again I will be totally deleting my stock gauge and hopefully installing this - hopefully with minimal cutting of VDO plastic housing.
I can't wait to get started - and I will post photos of my progress!
Very cool! That looks close enough to stock that most people wouldn't even notice it. I have an '84 and I just finished swapping my speedometer and fixing my odo gear. I just buttoned everything back up yesterday, otherwise I would've sent you the measurements!
OK guys so I measured the speedo and it is 3-3/8...I will finally get to order tomorrow.
As I mentioned earlier, speedhut is going to add my previous milage as well as include a button on a wire that I can mount under the pod!
I have also verified the depth of the gauge is only 1 inch... I thought I was going to have to cut the plastic (really didn't want to) - however, check out the photo.. The depth where I would need to cut is exactly 1 inch! Wow, is this really going to be plug and play???
Following this thread with great interest! I wonder if they can do more fonts than the ones listed on their customization options, or the same Euro font but not italicized.
Actually I am pretty sure they can - quite a few years ago we had them do custom gauges for a Lincoln Mark VIII group buy and I seem to remember they offered to pretty much do whatever is wanted.
Slightly off topic, but since both Simon and Cookr have done the odo gear fix, what is the approximate time requirement start to finish for a first timer. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and I've read all the writeups on the repair, but I've been a little hesitant to tackle this one becasue of all so many tiny parts. Seems like it would be easy to screw up.

The first one I did took me 3+ hours, and a lot of that time was trying to figure out what the directions were really saying and how to get at the various parts. More recently I have gotten under an hour, but I think I have a pod in and out of a car 20+ times by now. Some vintage cars are easier than others...some you can rotate the pod down and leave all the switches connected. A couple have required removing some switches....takes longer for certain. Just make certain your new gear is not bound up or very tight when it is installed....Dwayne's writeup is near perfect....as to things to watch out for, some of the holes in some gears are slightly too small, need to ream out the hole very slightly, on occasion the gear is longer than the old gear requiring a bit of filing to reduce the height of the gear, and some gears are slightly too large in diameter, requiring a washer shim under the motor mount screw to lift the motor about .015", and finally I personally add a bit of lubriplate to the worm gear. I have found all 3 of these problems in the 10 or so replacements I have been involved in. Porsche did not have an absolute specification or absolute quality control on the spedo / odo assemblies, and they do differ car to car and year to year.
