Honestly, the odo fix is incredibly easy, and this is coming from someone whose only mechanical experience began when I bought my 928 two years ago. Surprisingly, the most finicky part of the job was getting the odometer numbers to line up. If you're taking the pod out for the first time it might take around an hour, and the odo gear replacement took a little longer than that, but as i said most of that time was spent getting the numbers to line up properly. Dwayne's write-up is spot on, so just do as he says and you'll be fine. Trust me, if I can do it, ANYONE can. Proceed with confidence.

Yes, the button is for the first issue - the fact that the new gauge will sit behind the clear plastic.... Therefore the button will drop down out of the pod so I can mount it possibly under the dash.

ODO wheel has already been replaced....

Like I mentioned earlier I have ripped this apart 3 times replacing the ODO gear and cleaning everything I knew to clean. I also tried rewiring the speedo sender wires in the hatch..All with the same unreliable result... Do I feel like I am wrong for getting rid of the OEM gauge? Yes... however the benifits of this should be great!

First thing I did was to remove the clear plastic face of the pod with a small screwdriver - very carefully to make sure I didn't crack it...

Gauge fits!

a view from the back..

I obviously wanted to keep any cutting at a minimal... I used every hole possible...The only cutting required was to increase the area of the small square hole where the trip reset wires once were...

After cutting a bit with the dremel, I fit the GPS wire and pushbutton wire through the old trip wire hole. There are also two holes in the back of the housing that I was able to use as well... The top hole is I used for the 3 wires that must be hooked up...The bottom hole is a hotwire gps option that will immediately register with gps..(I don't mind waiting 30 seconds so I will not wire this)

I had room to tuck in the extra wires...

I really think this looks better with the chrome gauge rings off ebay for $15.. I can't wait to install the pod now asap!

More to come!....

Well done - that looks awesome.
Why did you not hook up the fast GPS hot wire?

hotwire runs off battery (low current) and is optional for acquiring satellite immediately... I guess I COULD but I'm not really sure where I am going to get 12v power anyway... I thought I would just run it over to the fuse panel and try something there... I usually let my car sit for a min before I take off anyway... I tested INSIDE my garage last night and it acquired within 15 seconds... I was thrilled.. How would you recommend getting 12v power? These wires are small - I thought I could just stick them into the top of a fuse clip??? What about ground??

With Porsche Font and a black bezel it would have looked more stealth but you will like the speedo, I used one in another project. The LCD although small also displays compass, digital speed, max speed etc .. pretty cool for such a small package. Also Speedhut is great to deal with, excellent customer service.

Good luck with your install!

Nice! Reading through the thread I was wondering how it would register speed right after startup since GPS's take a while to aquire the satellite signals, but I see in the last few posts, there's a constant power wire to keep the GPS circuits going all the time. I would think this would be a slight drain on the battery that may not matter day to day, but if the car was sitting for a few weeks, it might. Seems like you would definately want to connect this wire though. Does your stereo have constant power hooked up? If so, you could tap into that.

Very cool mod. Thank you for experimenting.

After several attempts of fixing my odo in my old 944, I chit-canned the whole cluster (attached). This mod makes much more sense.

I am faced with this repair and am going to strongly consider your modification. Thanks!

I'm so glad you guys came up with this.

Been dealing with an '82 with issues, 6 clusters later I've got everything working but the flucking speedo and am going to steer the owner in this direction. I so want to pull the trigger.............
