Default Ok, i am stumped .. trans fluid help

just drained the torque converter and trans, cleaned pan, and installed new gasket, and got it all reinstalled..

SOOOO..

how the heck do i add fluid.

My 87 has a resonance chamber RIGHT beside the plastic reservoir...

how I can barely see the darn thing, let alone access it.

Steven,
you can hook up a long piece of plastic tubing to syphon from a container sitting on something near the fuel filler. Clear plastic works best as you can see what's happening.
Make sure you have handy some way of stopping the flow (at the outlet end) to reduce spillage.

Alternatively you can 'pump' fluid in from a suitable container.

Neither method is particulary fast - be patient.

You will need to fill to max then run things briefly to fill the torque converter then top up.

Get you about 3' of clear tubing and a drill driven pump, available at most hardware stores. Maybe $20 total. I usually set-up outboard the wheel so I can get the supply side as high, if not higher, than the AT reservoir. Small length into the fluid container, longer line running to the reservoir, pump in the middle. Plug in your drill and pump it in. Pretty straightforward.

Autozone, Harbor Freight & walmart all have a similar pump but its red. Put some cardboard down, i made a mess when i did the job.

I purchased the high mileage ATF fluid from Walmart, it was in a red container. I also used an additive to reduce leakage. Can't remember the name but it was highly recommended by the Mercedes club

OMG.......

you have to be a freaking contortionist to get to the fill cap.... what a stupid place for the fill...........

figured it out and have the above pump... pumped 3 quarts in tonight, and my wrist wore out... will finish in the AM... along with front sway bar bushings and the start of the opg MM job....

I am going to raleigh Wed.. and want to take the 928..

I am trying to get all the mechanical under the car stuff done before the alcantara dash comes in.
Doing the HVAC and dash at the same time.

After you fill it up, drive it around and then jack her up. I think you need to check the level while its running, after you shut it off the ATF comes back to the reservoir.

Porsche did not intend the transmisison to be filled at the cap. They intended it to be filled at the right front, where the tube with the ball bearing check valve inside and the metal cover is located. The metal cover keeps little drips from coming out past the check ball, only. You take the metal cover off, hook up a hose that is attached to a pump, and "bottom fill" from there. Super easy....no bubbles....and you don't have to wait for the transmission to "suck down" the reservour.

If some rocket scientist has lost the ball bearing that goes inside the tube, it will pour fluid out of the tube, when you remove the cover and you will want to replace the missing bearing first.

Never need to touch the "red cap" on the reservour.

I'm looking for someplace to buy the correct quick coupler for that fast fill connection. would make the job MUCH easier. For now I use the hand pump method.

Near the right front corner of the oil pan and up about two inches, there is a return hose from the front transmission cooler that is attached to the transmission, with a banjo bolt. Hanging straight down (going to the bottom of the pan level) is the filler tube, with the ball bearing check valve and the "cover". The cover is removed with a 19mm wrench. If you loosen and remove this "cover" (aluminum sealing washer at the top of it BTW), the "filling tube" will be exposed. There is a ball bearing inside this "filling tube" to keep gross amounts of fluid from running out. As I mentioned, if lots of fluid runs out, someone has "lost" the check ball and you need to get a new one, in order to not make a mess.

Attach a hose onto that "filler tube" and pump in fluid. Replace the cover, when you are done. There's a picture at the top of page 38-139, in the WSM showing a hose hooked onto this "filler tube" (with the "cover" off), but they don't say anything about it, in the instructions.

They "added" this feature in 1987, when they added the muffler on the passenger side, making access to the "red cap" very difficult. Every automatic from 1987 to 1995 has one. I haven't filled one through the "red cap" in 25 years.

It does appears like they made it for a quick disconnect fitting.....and I'm sure that their "filling apparatus" at the factory had one of these.

However:

Rubber hose. Push over fill pipe.

I have never seen one (though obviously GB has one) but am pretty sure the factory tool # is PNA 721 002, which is cheap. Problem is, it's NLA everywhere I have ever checked. Perhaps ZDMAK or Baumtools has an equivalent in their catalog but I dunno.

EDIT: Wonder whether it's some fancy metric somesuch, or just a 3/8" quick disconnect?

From the factory catalog:

EDIT #2: I think this is the fill plug, dunno much 'bout dem Rogerboxes...

Yup. That's what they are using in the pciture at the top of page 38-139, in the WSM.

Interesting that a guy with 3 stick shift cars would want one of these....

I'm guessing that this means you are skipping your medication again?

I thought we agreed that if I have to take it, so do you?
