Andre Hedrick's beloved 928 for sale
The Hedrick kids and I are so grateful for your friendship with Andre, your kind tributes, and all the amazing support (including the charity auction) that you have given to us in the 6 months since his death.
It's now time for us to find a good home for "Daddy's Toy Car", as the youngest dubbed it. It is a 1981 928 S-Type, and all the rest of the info that I'm giving you is based on what little I know:
*exterior paint- brown (what shade that is in your lingo, I don't know)
in good condition, but needs work.
*87-88- Greg Brown rebuilt G 28/13 transmission with limited slip differential
*laser jammer (ahem,... I mean "parking assistance") system installed.
*Great stereo system, including a CD changer and new Blaupunkt speakers.
*all kinds of other racing-type stuff done to the engine that only you gear-heads would know about ... ask Bill Ball, Nicole from Hooked On Cars, or arrange a time to come see it if you want to know what those things are.
*Failed (repeatedly) smog in California -- so I need an out-of-state buyer or someone who will agree to buy it as a "planned non-operational vehicle" and flat-bed it out of here. It runs, but I can't sell it to a CA buyer as a running vehicle unless I want to risk being taken to court and forced to pay for fixes to get it past smog. I can't afford that.
Bottom line-- I need to sell it for around 7K, if I'm going to have enough to put the three younger kids back into the private school next year where they've had such good emotional support this year. Contact me offline at valandre@astound.net to talk further. We are in the Concord/Walnut Creek area of Northern California.
Again, my deepest thanks to all of you, Andre's car-enthusiast community. You are a class act, all of you.
-Val

Very nice.
I'm sure Hacker will sticky this when he sees it.
Somebody help out with a reasonable price - the starting one seems to be far too low.

I had just posted a new thread "Which 928 for us... suggestions needed." when I saw this thread and then I read through the earlier thread on Andre's life and contributions... very moving even for someone that never knew him and who is new to the 928 forum. I would love to be able to buy this car... because the passion of someone like Andre makes it more than a normal 928 as well as the fact that it is about what I am looking for. If there was a reasonable way to get it to the other side of the country and the other side of the border I would take it up with my partener... (can't get much farther away from California than here in Montreal).
Good luck with the sale...

Those are great wheels on this 81.
The late model transmission in an early car is a HUGE upgrade, too.
(I just paid nearly $2000 to acquire a used version)

elgy: you should think about this very seriously. This would be an awesome starting point if you are after a very nice 16V car. The weakest point of the 16V cars is the 5 speed tranny. They last well, but generally shift hard. This car has been upgraded to the later 5 speed and should shift nicely. Just the tranny plus the work to install it is near the 5K she states in the original post. Add in very nice paint, lots of TLC and performance upgrades (looks like either S or S4 brakes, just to start), and I think you have a winner.

When I suggested a price range to Valerie, I did not know that Andre's 928 has
- GTS mirrors - Those are at least $500 new (unpainted).
- A built-in Laser Jammer
- Any details about or the value of its later style transmission
I really hope somebody picks it up and pays the family a fair price for the car.
When we came to their house to inventory Andre's parts, we learned that he had purchased many new rubber seals. This leads me to believe he was planning to repaint the car in the not too distant future. Given that he kept it in good mechanical condition and added all the upgrades, I think it would be a worthwhile candidate for a complete paint restoration.
Or someone could possibly use it as a track car, where paint is not that important.
PS: It sounded great when Bill pulled it out of the garage!

this car is mechanically EXCELLENT.....Andre had piles of spare parts.....and knew what was the best for his car..... I am proud to have known him....I wish I was in a position to buy this 928 as a daily driver.... All the "upgrades" he did made sense...later properly rebuilt transmission...full S4 brakes...he did it right.... I miss Andre....he was a great person and a great 928er....I only wish I could have helped him with his struggle....

That is a freakin' steal... There are a couple of guys on here looking for "decent" 928s in the $5K to $10K range... This is THE car and its well above decent! If I had the cash I'd already have the plane tickets in my hand... Oh, and I'd give her more than $5K too... because # 1: the car is worth much more, and # 2 Cause thats how we roll...
Pass this on to anyone who's looking - I doubt this car NEEDS anything.

We purchased a very nice sports style camper van some years back. When I picked it up in Atlanta the family went on about how much their dad use to love his trips to the Rockies with it before he passed. They thought agent orange cancer but who knows. With him being a Vet I never forgot how much that Van meant to him. We used that Van to cover most of the US as my kids grew up. Long story short, that vehicle meant so much more to me knowing that it came from someone who loved it. This is a great oppurtunity for someone to have a great well cared for car, and also have a car that has a nice history.

The border is a nuisance, but not a big deal...there's many here who can advise on that....and otherwise it's a "road trip". (Bear in mind that long, high speed highway runs are what these cars were engineered for).
And you have HUGE benefit that people here know the recent history of the car, it was owned by an enthusiast who knew and cared about what he was doing.
I didn't.......did my own PPI and took a chance.......found out later it was part of a a Rennlist member's fleet though...that helped me feel better. Been a few years now and still going strong.
You get a great car, a great road trip, great photos, good memories.........bonus!.
And, we need more up here....Montreal seems to have the most...we're a little thin west of that though.
Aucun problème.

The weather is so much nicer now in Cali than in Montreal. Come for a day, stay for a couple months, drive home when it's once again temperate in Quebec.

I saw that car in person a few years back, before driving down to Sharktoberfest w/ Andre. We took his BMW because he was hauling down a transmission. It is a nice color combination.
