I think she said it won't pass smog inspection and in CA, if it doesn't pass inspection the title can't go through or something like that.
From first post:
She doesn't want to be left open to anything down the line by selling it as a running vehicle in CA.
From first post:
*Failed (repeatedly) smog in California -- so I need an out-of-state buyer or someone who will agree to buy it as a "planned non-operational vehicle" and flat-bed it out of here. It runs, but I can't sell it to a CA buyer as a running vehicle unless I want to risk being taken to court and forced to pay for fixes to get it past smog. I can't afford that.

Yup, California law is that the smog check is what the "Seller" must take care of, not the buyer. So if it cannot pass the smog then the DMV wont allow the transfer (even if they did you cant get it to pass the smog anyway)

Buy it bring it to Nevada, put Classic Plates on it and be done with it. Just rent a Nevada mail box. WTF, just say you got a vacation home in Vegas, and use the mail box as your address, and have it insured in Nevada.

I think the issue is that in Calif the buyer can be a huge PITA if it has smog issues, and they don't want to risk problems with a sale. If they register it as non op I believe that lets them off the hook, but I would still want be sure the buyer was going to be nice about the situation.

Unless it is burning oil, how hard can it be to get it to pass smog? If I was out there, I would certainly be willing to help get it fixed. Sadly I am across the country and the divorce has me temporarily passport-less.

California is a huge pain in the butt. You legally can't sell a car that has not passed smog. Not even as a "parts car". Sure there are ways around everything but she just doesn't want the liability or extra work. If I were outside CA I'd seriously consider this car. I need a spare 928 for when mine is down.

When I bought my 928 almost 3 years ago ( on fleabay) I totally forgot that the seller needed smog docs. Took the car home, washed it, tried to figure out what I just bought.
It was a California car, seller was in San Mateo. I took it to the 7 Days smog check in Berkeley. It would not pass...Why? No cat. Duh and it had MSDS headers.
I had a cat installed, took it back to the smog shop and it passed and I left the headers on.
They never looked under the car. I have had one smog check since and it passed again.
I think, Andre told me he didn't have a cat. Not sure if I remember this correctly or not.
My bet is that if someone took the car to get a smog check, A: it might pass, B: you would find out where it's deficient. Then fix it problem.
