E15 - devil's brew

Lets have a conversation about facts and figures instead of emotions and opinion based upon third person conversations over too much beer.

Cleaner burning is not the argument. The argument is damage to system from ethanol vs. non-ethanol fuel.
No figures needed.
Facts are plentiful. Right now my snow blower is down with a clogged carburator from ethanol fuel. You may claim improper off season storage but the fact remains, I do not have this problem with non-ethanol fuel.
Emotions and opinion are strong. In my ignorance, I will continue to use only non-ethanol fuel in my "off road" engines.
Beer not involved. I don't drink alcohol, I use it for fuel. .

I use regular E10 gas in my pressure washer engine. No problems.
Is that fact or just anecdotal evidence?

Three Wheelin'
Man... I love how this gets everyone going We can bitch all we want but the fact remains this stuff is NOT going away because its all about MONEY! Too may people with way more $$ than me have paved the way for themselves to make even more $$... ADM is only one member of the Ag Lobby and it is huge! The reason were being subjected to ethanol (whether we like it or not) is because ethanol is marketed as a "green" fuel. Make no mistake, this is not about protecting the environment, but rather its a marketing gold mine. Its almost as good as the bottled water scam... make people think they need it and its good for you with labels like "Crystal Clear" and charge out the butt for it. Pay $1.00 for a pint bottle of cold "filtered" water at a gas station and bitch about the price of gas at $4 a gallon. That pint of water costs them $8 a gallon... from Philladelphia... thats successful marketing. I make this point because ethanol is not GREEN, it doesnt help the environment and it produces less energy so you burn more of it... the whole carbon footprint thing is more marketing gold. In the end your gas mileage sucks and you BUY MORE gas! Key words... BUY MORE... less efficient gas at the same price you'd pay for pure gas & better mileage... Is it starting to gel yet? Slowly... like the gas in my mower? Myself, I'd rather drink ethyl alcohol filtered over charcoal & aged in oak ( cause I like single barrel bourbon... or Russian Vodka if were at Frenzy The problem is gas stations rarely carry non-ethanol gas because its becoming scarce (just like leaded fuel did and eventually was gone). Follow the money and you'll find the reason for its existance... Looks like were just gonna have to deal with it

Ethanol blends came into use because the Clean Air Act mandates the use of oxygenates in fuel in "attainment" areas where air quality is determined to be a problem. Ethanol is an oxygenate that increases that oxygen content of fuel and makes for a more complete burn. Before ethanol was used for this purpose, an additive known as MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) was used in the US. There is controversy over whether MTBE is carcinogenic but agreement about two things - it spreads readily and rapidly in groundwater and makes the water taste like crap. The US has lots of gas stations and lots of leaky gas stations storage tanks. Between the threat of MTBE lawsuits and the almighty agricultural lobby, MTBE was abandoned in the U.S. and replaced with ethanol. Once ethanol got a toehold, the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 required the sale of E15 as a "renewable" fuel.
All this happened well before our current president took office. You can still blame him or the ag lobby or the EPA or the lawyers but the point is that the Senators and Reps you vote into office - not EPA or "obooba" or G. W. Bush - came up with a mandate for E15. If you vote them in, you can vote them out. You can also exercise your right as a constituent to write, call or email.
Personally, I think E10 or E15 isn't going to hurt my shark or my weed-whacker. E85 will cause damage, but that is a whole different animal.
If you built something with parts certified for gasoline without ethanol and ethanol blends came along, would you cover your butt or say the E15 would probably be OK?

No **** it puts out less smoke because it puts out less energy so you have to burn much more of it. Also consider the water and fossil fuel resources it waste's to produce but that is never figured into the equation, No thinking person can argue its good for the enviorment when all facts are considered. It's actually pretty insulting to make us watch that clip of a chilldlike science experiment and use it as any validation as to the smart use of ethonal. Sorry for my daily rant, I'll be nice now

The general consensus is that this has become more of a problem in recent years than in the past.
If ethanol fuel is not the problem, would someone please explain the cause of this?

No disrespect intended because your snowblower may have been meticulously maintained, but the reasoning that something failed after two decades due to a recent change in fuel chemistry seems to be tenuous. Perhaps the next person who suffers a 928 fire loss should go after an oil company and Cargill or Archer Daniels Midland. After all, the lines worked fine for 25 years and only failed after they started using ethanol blends.

I have a generator that is 12yrs old, and sits on the side of my house.
It hasnt had a maintenance period, added oil once, had no air filter can on it..and the gas from the last run, is the gas on the next run the following winter storm outage season...and when not in use, is either baked by the sun in the dry season, or literally dripping wet on any surface or or out, from the huge humidity swings we get.
Starts second pull every time.
Sorry bout your snowblower.

Thank you all very much for clearing that up.
I am relieved to know that the dirty stinky bad gas, corrosion and goo that is clogging my carburetor is due to 20 year old aluminum and has absolutely nothing to do with the fuel that was in it through the off season.
I shall sleep much better tonight.
And now I’m off to water my garden with ethanol and have the healthiest, most colorful, best smelling roses on the block.
