Engine won't start and tachometer high (video)
Dear 928 experts
I need your help please! My car won't start. I made a video what is happening, please notice the tachometer going very high, but at the fourth try (at 50 seconds) when it does start it stays low before it starts:
I was hoping if someone recognizes this problem.
It is pretty damp/moist in the car currently, perhaps it is electrical.
I have not tried much yet, I charged the battery, checked there is fuel in the gas tank, moved the fuel pump fuse a bit and switched the fuel delivery pump relay (XVII) with the additonal fan relay (XVIII).
Any ideas? Anything is appreciated! Thanks!!

It stopped freezing. I can open my doors again! I couldn't even turn the locks
While it was freezing I decided to get a car port. The 928 has to get dry! I designed it in google sketchup and already got permission from the local authorities.
Anyway, this weekend I will have a look at the tachometer problem, for the first time! I looked around the manual a bit, printed some stuff, and am planning to check for the following:
- check ignition control units for water, rusty/loose connectors, especially connection 16 that goes to the speed/reference mark sensor
- remove plug G in relay panel to see if that fixes it, it goes to the tachometer. Of course also check for proper connection of plyg G.
- checking connector on tdc sensor and speed/reference mark sensor
- check internal resistance on plug speed/refence mark sensor between terminals 7 and 19
- reseat computer cables in relay panel, especially check terminatals 7 and 19 on those connectors
If anyone else has a good idea to check for please let me know! Highly appreciated.

Concor, look to see if you have 2 distributors on the driver's side, if so, the CPS is at the back of the v right above the bellhousing. I hear they can be tricky to get in and out.
Otherwise, green wire that connects into the distributor would be suspect.

I realized after post that dual-distirbutor Euro may not have a green wire but I am inexeperienced with 16V...thanks for the additional info.
The CPS is sometimes frozen in the bellhousing after removing the single screw holding it in...ideally (and this was the case with the only one I've removed), you can rotate it back and forth while pulling gently upward and get it out in 30 seconds, but sometimes they require a shot of WD-40 and gingerly removal because they can be brittle and break off in the bellhousing if they bind/stick to it, as I understand it.

Euro S I believe started using CPS in 84 so I agree with your initial suspect.

Check the two additional wires to the battery +ve terminal are tight (they have a seperate bolt to the big wire)
Check out EZ-F relay, LH relay and FP relay.
Tach high readings may be EZ-F not synchronising to the timing ring gap. So definitely check the 3 way plug/socket near the CPS.

I don't like your battery, it's turning your engine over to slow, do a load test on your battery, all porsche 928, spins a lot faster that your is turning over, and if your shark stays outside, check all your relays for bad contacts to the fuse panel.

Wow guys, excellent tips!!
Definitely gonna try out all those relays John mentions! I didnt' realize I had to check that many
And I believe my CPS connector is a bit loose! I seem to remember the metal clip is not on properly, definitely gonna check that out.
And the all the rest that you guys mention! Like the green wire Again, thank you VERY much for these tips! Really, really helpful. And very valuable now that I think of it!
Gonna update with some photos after the weekend. I really hope I find it, I miss my big baby

If your engine has the twin dizzys then it's a LH equipped 928S 16v. So it won't have the green wire that others have mentioned.
(If it does have an 8 spark single distributor, then yes, it will have a green wire...)
If you need new 3 pin male and female connectors for the CPs, I can supply them...

Ah. Well yes I do have the LH Jetronic system with two distributors, 928S 16V. I didn't make that up from the comments above yet that mine has no green wire. So no need to search for it then Thanks for the tip!
I did always wonder where that green wire would actually be cause I've been a couple times under the hood and can't really recall seeing it. This may be why

Fixed it!!
Relay VIII Electronic Ignition was loose! I wanted to switch it out with the Window Regulator relay and it felt loose. So after swapping them out and putting the other one down firmly everything worked again! The car started perfectly! Drove around 10 minutes and no problem whatsoever. So thanks John and 76FJ55 and all the others for thinking with me! You guys rock!
