Default What is so special about no sunroof

I realize that there is almost an automatic answer to the question; that being uniqueness. I have a five speed S4 with sunroof and wouldn't have it any other way. Here in Wyoming, our summers are truly glorious and I drive any time it is not raining (substantial rain is rare in these parts) with the sunroof open.

I have heard that Porsche bodies came with the sunroof opening and that the factory had to weld in a plate for non-sunroof cars. Any truth to this?

No, it is a true roof panel without a sunroof cutout on cars without sun roofs. Currently doing the sunroof delete on my 90GT project. A no-sunroof car gives you gobs more headroom. See this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ished-car.html

Cheers!

Yes, more headroom, smoother lines, less weight up high, etc. T

More than two, less than three I recall, but its been a long time since I measured.

I loved the sunroof in my 944T, but while I like some aspects of the sunroof on a 928, the net is huge negative for me.

I wonder if at some level within Porsche the sun roof wasn't a deliberate attempt to fubar the 928 for racing? (rules and even short guys with helmets).

Here is a bit of history:

The 928 was originally designed without sunroof - the designers and engineers assumed that once you have air conditioning, you would not want to open a sunroof anyway (which is pretty much how I use my cars; I have rarely opened it on the 928, and my new daily driver doesn't have a sunroof at all). In addition, a sunroof would be pretty noisy at Autobahn speeds.

When they realized that the market - particularly in the US - demanded a sunroof, it was too late to change the height of the roof...

Thank the car gods for that, or the 928 would have looked like a 70's version of the Panamera.

When I was looking for a 928 one of the must haves was a sun roof, I just like them, I'm 6'1" but my car will see never a race track so I don't need the extra headroom.

Mass up high is a race car problem.

Some pretty interesting answers, none of them having to do with the uniqueness aarea. As I saaid when starting this, I like the sunroof. I've owned the car since new and I'm only 5'8" so headroom is no problem for me. At 77 years of age I obviously don't race (and never did) so I've got all of the rodeworthiness I need. The summers out here in the Rockies are conducive to a sunroof. I have one on my Cadillac also.

I seriously think it was sabotage.

Opposite of unique, I tried HARD in 86 to buy a 928 without a sunroof, talked to maybe half a dozen dealers and only way they told me was to pay full price up front and wait several months. I don't know if that was BS, but I think less than 1%, maybe a lot less of later USA cars were non sun roof. If it wasn't a malicious act, why was it impossible to avoid?

The 928 was VERY popular among taller drivers, a very loyal customer base, and I am sure many walked out of dealers cursing PCNA.

Sunroof was something like $2500 added on the base price, its been a dealer pack (expensive dealer added against customer wishes) item for a long time within all makes.
