Default Stock GTS Intake Finish? Confirm or Deny

A recent purchaser of a '95 GTS is wondering if this finish on the intake and cam covers of his GTS is stock. I've seen some fade to a similiar color, but witout seeing it in person can't commit to an opinion.

Anyone have a pic they can post of their intake with a simlar patina?

Thanks!

Pretty close, but the one I posted has a pretty strong beige pigment to it The intake has that almost pearlescent effect that seems factory, but the cam covers look like almost a flat finish.
Keep the pics (and comments) coming, they are very helpful!

I think its probably stock... My early '94 started out as a pure silver tone then yellowed over the years to a champagne like metallic, (still looked good) then went more cloudy then quickly after that delaminated badly with cracks (on both sides and middle) - I'd say this one is approching that latter phase... I refinished mine about 3 years ago - so that would make some sense. BTW in these pictures the matt look effect is mainly dust - still a shiny finish but hardly worth cleaning it when it looked like this (bits would have fallen off)

'94 GTS 115K miles - well baked in the land of the sun

That does not look like stock coating in the OP.

Too beige.

Looks original to me. Judging from the engine bay, it looks like a very nice '95. Any more pics of the car, btw?

I'd say stock too....it's in that transition stage from silver to tan....with some silver still there....eventually they all turn a bland tan and start flaking off...

Stock silver finish which has turned beige with heat, just like mine did. Bruce Buchanan here in Australia (JET951) who has worked on Porsches all his life confirms this phenomena on cars he's worked on from new.

Here are pics of my '93 original finish when my intake had to come off.

Greg Brown asked me how I want it refinished, and I said I wanted to keep it original. His response was that once the intake is off I will find the finish is falling off, and he was right. A terrible finish on these magnesium parts, which are problematic by nature.

I found it interesting that the top of the intake had "yellowed" while underneath and closer to the heat was the true color. When removed, my GTS had about 45k original miles. Amazing to see the cracks at the edges and underneath on a finish that looked pretty good while the intake was on.

The OP pics lead me to conclude the finish is original. Hope that helps.

The poor quality of the original stock finish (even when not discolored) and the surface imperfections that showed very clearly even before stripping were what convinced me to swap to a matt/crinkle black finish - much more forgiving of surface blemishes and the black shows up less dirt (up to a point...).

Powerdercoat vs the stock (heavy/special) paint - I'm hopefull it will last the rest of the cars lifetime...

That's an interesting point.

I think it's a combination of exposure to oxygen/ozone and heat that does it.
If the paint has been shielded from air, then it would have less color change.
Cars from warmer and/or more polluted regions will have more discoloration?

My ~50K mile '88 lived in AZ for a while.
The engine paint is fully oxidised, except for where the it has been covered by a hose, for example.
It is somewhat more silver underneath.

I think the clear/white plastic parts will show how much heat the engine has lived through.

On my '88, the coolant tank was in bad shape, even with low miles.

Notice the state of the washer fill spout in the original pic.

Porken,

Thanks for the pic, that's what I was looking for - the flat beige color, especially on the cam covers. The metallic, almost pearlescent finish on the intake in my OP looked factory to me, but the fact that pigment had totally bleached out was odd. Your pic confirms that they can take on that particular color.
