I dont have time for all the optional sources like usb and cards, so I got a JVC unit with DVD capability - so far I have 1100 mp3 tracks on a disc, and I put it on disc random. That covers quite a long trip with minimal repeats for me. The car had a Pioneer HU in it when I got it (2001), but still had the ET goosneck remote from an original Blaupunkt unit sticking out of the console, unconnected to anything.

OK Tom (et al) - here is how it looks now...

It does look exactly as I was aiming for. Note how the deck has a slightly rasied rim which is a pretty good match to the rim around the HVAC head unit - though the corner radius is a little different. In these photos you can see a really big color difference between the matt and gloss surfaces - it actually isn't as different as it looks - its mostly a textural difference.

The big change is the 928 **** of course - it started life as a blower **** - and is now cut down & routed out to a different shape & size, the insert is not actually attached to the **** and comes from a dash reset switch - its a bit modified also and is illuminated from below. It has push button select operation independant from the ring of the **** (as required by the Asteroid).

Still needs a little work to change the height a tad... and the logo is likely temporary until I figure out a suitable custom one, maybe just a round dot.

I'm happy with the general adaptations and the head unit itself - it works well, sound quality is more than adequate for my needs and it has great source options and reasonable features (really need a tethered phone to take advantage of its features though).

I am still working on adding different (nicer) pigtails for the remote usb, audio, iPod inputs inside the armrest - allowing for an ipod placed in there controlled from the head unit, or a phone on charge.

That's pretty cool looking Alan.... Without a doubt looks like it belongs with the 928...

I was thinking that the original button (with the "Parrot" text) could be replaced by a simple Porsche Crest underneath the clear part of the button.?? Does the original button come apart..or is it a solid piece?

Tom - don't know - On mine its still there underneath - just pretty burried - the clear ring is also still there - just that now you don't need to touch it.

It was an odd major control choice - the ring was rather awkward to operate - its a little too shallow & slick to grab easily as a **** - and the center button is inset quite a way. Seems mainly they wanted a way to highlight their Parrot logo. I'd prefer not to highlight that so much - so now its gone... it does still provide the light for the new **** though...

BTW you were fast responding to that post!

I have been seriously looking at the Parrot Asteroid Classic for some time now. My only issue with it is that it is Android 1.6 and not 2.3 or higher. Parrot's newer offerings don't really fit the bill, since it needs to be a single-din in-dash receiver.

Alan - the Parrot radio looks very good. What are the two colored buttons or lights just above the radio?

Dan which version is actually mostly irrelevant because its not natively Android app compatible and it's totally Parrot skinned so you'd never know what version you have without looking - so I don't think you'd care much either unless you planned to design apps for it?

It is what it is - unfortunately it has limited apps today - an ecosystem thing... there are few developers lining up due to the small installed base, so Parrot has to fund their development. It is nice that Parrot seems committed to the platform based on many new asteroid offerings - growing the user base is about the only way to get 3rd party developer interest. Have to hope the 'Classic' gets updates to stay compatible with new developments/apps - so far so good...

I'd like to see a sensor monitoring system of some kind (an OBD/OBDII that might be hackable for diag I/O), some more good location based services, text to voice for phone integration and a really good PTP nav app.

But I think I'd likely use a dedicated PND with a bigger screen anyway... I used to have a Blaupunkt Single DIN Nav system - was OK but really very limited due to display size for a moving map type system - still I expect they will add some ~decent(ish) Nav soon.

Bob - those are some of the extra's on my car. They are illuminated push switches - left one operates my remote garage door opener that is wired to the car battery and lives in the nose of the car (however it stopped working a little while ago so need to check into that..) the other is the alert light and cancel button for the M25 Blinder laser jammer.

I did a bit more work today and added a panel/box (needs some finishing/mounting) for dual USB (phone/3G-4G modem/charger & iPod) and line-in connectors. These plug into the back of the Asteroid. It comes with pigtail extenders with inline USB plugs and a 3.5mm line-in jack - but I think the panel is much tidier and eliminates a bit of a rats nest.

Has anyone squeezed a double din in there dash? I'd love to see pics if so please.. I know it will take some council modification but I'm thinking of putting an Alpine INA-W910 in.

Where are all the vintage Alpine installs? Big green square buttons look right at home in the 928.

jp these days you can get an SDCard or USB key with 32GB capacity for <$25 so you can inexpensively store a huge amount of songs - many many times what will fit on a DVD - and if desired plug it in and forget about it... or easily move to a computer to play music or reload...

System is simpler without a DVD drive and should (?) theoretically be more reliable - and certainly faster to index and find things via voice search etc
