Are there any good 2 DIN units with buttons?

When googling for a best price I ran across this video of a distortion test:


In the test the max was 0.015% THD...

That is bizarre since on the Pioneer website they don't say the same thing.

Wow. Buying a prs80 spare is about as much an endorsement as you can get.

I was looking because on my 88 S4 the tuner had gone out on my Sony head unit but then I just figured I would swap it with the old Sony, that I kept. All was well for about 30 minutes time and then the CD player stopped working on the older unit. I really don't want to put the original Blaupunkt back in. Also my 91 has a CD-2 with non-working CD so need to replace that too. I guess these things aren't built to last.

Now I am back to looking again for something new, at least starting with the 88 S4, which is my "fluff mobile." Either the kenwood or the pioneer is what I am narrowing down to. Hans shipped me some new speakers I hope to get Friday so I'm motivated again to get this sorted out. My 88 is currently running an Alpine Ktp445u by the passenger seat, with a California subwoofer amp and Polk C4 isobaric sub in the back, so the flexibility and preamp sound quality is mostly what I am after. It'd be nice to have some preset buttons on the front but looks like that is not the norm anymore.

Well I have checked the specs on the Pioneer DEH-80PRS and it is quite an outstanding unit for a reasonable price. I feel it is a little too modern in the console BUT a reasonable replacement in terms of finissh and look in a 928 console. The other unit wworth taking a look at is the Kenwood eXceleron KDC-997 and 998. Again great specs (not quite as good as the Pioneer) but close and slightly cheaper. Now my question is what Amplifier should I match up with either of these units and one that is not going to consume great gobs of space in the cabin. Maybe something that can install onto the parcel shelf in the passenger section. My current amp is a large unit mounted to a wooden board that covers the fuse and relay assembly and sits under the carpet/mats. It gets hot and if the volumeto moderately high it can cut out briefly - assumming a thermal cut out.

Anyway, any thoughts on a suitable reasonably priced to suit wither of these headunits???

Would the 80 PRS be a good HU on my GTS if I was going to keep the stock amp and speakers? Or, is there a good amp that would fit in the stock amps place and drive the stock speakers?

I'm not familiar with the stock amp, but Rockford fosgate makes a small amp about the size of the original amp. Reasonably priced as well. Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4.
I have not heard one. I think someone on renn installed one in the factory location.

I would guess you'd be ahead simply bypassing the stock external amp with any decent modern head unit, unless you replace the amp with something else. As for the Pioneer, it's not that expensive, however in that configuration you're still wasting money, IMO, because you're paying for high quality audio components you won't really make use of. There are cheaper options that are just as good for that. I personally think the finish on the Pioneer is a bit too glossy for the rest of the interior, although it's not that bad, and the ergonomics are baffling, but that may be because I've been using Alpines for years.

Remember that the 6" drivers in the B pillar are 2 ohms. If you are not going to replace them with 4 ohm drivers then the OE AMP is what you need.

Theoretically you could drive 6" speakers with the OE amp with the pre-out from a new HU and drive the other 8 speakers with the speaker-level outputs from the new HU.

Anyway you do it you'll be spending non-trivial time and thought on wiring. And buy a refoaming kit for the 6" drivers; they probably need it.

I still need to get to measuring the stock speaker performance for each stock speaker driver size (I bought a calibrated mic) and figure out whether I can make improvements with custom-designed crossovers.. a job for winter weekends!

Yes. I'm using the head unit to power the rear mids/tweeters, and the Soundstream amp to power the doors and rear woofers via front/rear RCA's.

Cool. I just wanted to make sure that folks understood that driving all 10 OE speakers on an '89+ is a 6-channel affair.

Thanks, Dave. So, just can't slide a new HU in there and keep the stock setup without rewiring, huh? Was trying to keep as stock as possible but have a working radio. Maybe just try to find a working stock gts HU.
